We are requesting for a PLL and VCO combination solution

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMX2594, LMX2572, LMX2571, LMK03318, LMK04208

Hi,

We have a requirement for PLL and VCO combination with below specifications:

1) Input Frequency : 7.68 MHz

2) Output Frequency: 16.384 MHz

3) Number of Clock outputs: 4 ( ok if 4 is not available)

We had a PLL Frequency Synthesizer part from NXP "MC145170" which is obsolete now, so we are looking for functionally equivalent part. I have attached screenshot of schematics for reference.

  • Hello Kiran,

Will this be in a new schematic / PCB or are you looking for pin-compatible device?

With just he information offered, we have many options that are available. Could you help me understand more of the application of this device? Will it be used in Medical, Automotive, etc?

  • Hi Aaron,

We are redesigning phase of the board.

It would be really helpful if you can suggest a Pin-Pin compatible replacement.

If not available, then please suggest a functionally equivalent part.

This part will be used in Telecommunication application in PLCC equipment (Power Line Carrier Communication).

  • Hello Kiran,

The 'MC145170' device is a PLL Frequency Synthesizer with Serial Interface within a TSSOP-16 or SOG-16 package. The Frequency Synths offered are not 16 pin packages. Please utilize LMX2571 (36-pin), LMX2594 (40-pin) or LMX2572 (40 pin).

I would think most Clock Gens can work fairly well for previous functionality demand. Please see LMK03318, LMK04208 or LMK04906B.

  • Please find my below questions on the part you shared:

    1) This PLL has internal VCO or do we need connect external VCO

    2) Each output of clock can generate independent frequency?

    3) we need to provide clock to 4 ADCs, do we need to connect each clock output to single ADC or a single output can drive 4 ADC

    4) We need to provide clock of 16.384 to 4 ADCs, so a single PLL can serve the purpose.

    5) A single IC can replace our current circuit section (PLL+ VCO)?

  • Hello Kiran,

    1. Since the required frequency is the same of all outputs only one PLL setting is necessary.

    2. After the PLL there could be post-divider and/or individual output divider.

    3. I cannot comment on this as I don't know the ADC requirements. I am assuming the ADC needs a clean clock in which case using individual outputs is best.

    4. See #1 comment.

    5. We have many Clock Generators that can resolve this need.
