DAC121S101: Radiation inquiry for the package

Part Number: DAC121S101

Hello, I'm looking at the DAC121S101/Q1 automotive version vs the DAC121S101QML-SP, and would like to understand the differences in the part themselves.

Do they both use the same die? Are the packages the same?

Thanks in advance!

Peter

  • Hi Peter,

To my understanding, the SP grade device is actually a different die.  We had to adjust the process to pass our radiation qualification.

The packages are also different.  The SP grade device is in a 10-lead ceramic SOIC, while the commercial and auto grade are in plastic SOT and VSSOP packages.

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

    Thanks for the fast response!

Do you know what about it specifically needed to change to meet the process, was this something like a change in the passivation layer? I've also seen that the specs for the space part is above and beyond what I might require for a space application. Is it possible to see the results for which the die failed?

    Thanks!

    Peter

  • Let me check on this.  I am not sure if we can share that information.  Generally, if a customer is looking to use a device in an environment that it is not qualified for, we suggest that they do their own qualification testing and offer no guarantees.

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • Hi Paul, have you had any more luck on checking what information could be shared?

    Thanks!

    Peter

  • Hi Peter,

We cannot share the post-exposure test results.  There were changes to the device that were required to make it space hardened, but I cannot disclose that either.

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • I see, that's too bad. The last few questions then.

    • Could we receive the information under coverage of an NDA
    • If we could, would we be able to send you ours via email

    Thanks,

    Peter

  • Hi Peter,

I understand your request.  The problem is that we have already created a space grade version of the DAC121S101 at great cost of development.  I recognize that not all space applications require this high-grade version, so it might be beneficial to take a catalog or automotive grade device and test to see if it can withstand the radiation for the expected mission duration.  We have many customers doing this with our other devices.

The issue with disclosing the specific changes and potential device failures is that we will ultimately losing business, as we will be compromising product that we have already invested in creating.  I recommend that if you are considering using a catalog device in your application, you must qualify and validate its performance after stressing it with your expected mission dosage.

Sorry I could not be more help!

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

Understood, thanks for talking through all of that this helps.

    Best regards,

    Peter
