ADS5263: Power consumption per channel in power down mode.

Part Number: ADS5263

Hello,

Would you kindly clarify the power consumption of  a given channel when it is put in "powerdown mode" using the register at "0xF"!

Below is the specification regarding the chip power from the datasheet. is it safe to assume that the per channel power consumption is the "Global Power down/4" even when using the serial interface?

Thank you

  • Hello Abtin,

    Thanks for reaching out.

As you know, the device has power-down options to save power when it is not getting used. The Global Power Down essentially powers down almost all the blocks and standby powers down blocks except internal references. In both the cases, datasheet shares the net power consumption since not any channel is active. So per channel power consumption inherently doesn't make sense.

But having said that, yes, you can crudely say that per channel power consumption is the "Global Power down/4" even when using the serial interface.

    Thanks & regards,

    Abhishek

  • Hello Abhishek,

Thank you for the response! The motivation behind my question was to roughly calculate the power usage of the chip when 3 out of the 4 channels are unused (put into power down mode using the serial interface) due to our power budget, and I assumed that I can go about this by doing the following:

    (analog power / 4 ) + 3*(global power down/4) + digital power = 1.22W/4 + 3*(110mW/4) + 0.2W ~ 0.6W

as opposed to the case where the total power is roughly analog power + digital power = 1.22W+0.2W = 1.24W

Does this line of reasoning make sense?

    Thank you

  • Hi Abtin,

I understand your reasoning now, you are using only 1 channel and want to estimate power consumption.

It will definitely not be analog power + digital power

But somehow I am not convinced with this equation as well

     (analog power / 4 ) + 3*(global power down/4) + digital power

Let me give it a thought tomorrow and get back to you.

    Thanks & regards,

    Abhishek

  • Hi Abtin,

Apologies for not getting back early.

I checked and confirmed with my team on this.

It is not really straight forward to estimate power consumption for channel power down mode in terms of analog power or global power down.

It is because in the signal chain many blocks share analog and digital power which are not powered down while channel power down is enabled. One such example could the LVDS PLL which will still be active and consume the same power. So saying analog power will become 1/4 is not correct.

It is best if you have the hardware, you can quickly check and estimate.

    Thanks & Regards,

    Abhishek
