ADC12DJ3200QML-SP: Dual channel mode operation

Part Number: ADC12DJ3200QML-SP

Hello,

My customer has a few questions about the ADC12DJ3200QML-SP.

They want to use the ADC12DJ3200QML-SP with the following conditions.

   - Dual-channel mode with DDCA, 16 decimation 2 lanes or 1 lane

   - Input Signal : approx. 3.6GHz, using channel A only / channel B left unconnected (not used)

   - Sampling CLK : approx. 2Gsps

Q1. Is it possible to use the ADC12DJ3200QML-SP with the above concept ?

Q2. If only A channel is used in dual-channel mode to use DDCA, should I leave the unused B-channel unconnected? or should do something?

Q3. For permanent power saving on unused B channel, how to use power down mode only for B channel without damage of output serializers while long time Power down.

Thank you.

JH

  • Hi JH,

What you'd like to do sounds feasible, but let me look into the details so I can get you best set up. Regarding your third question, you are saying you never plan to use channel B, correct?

    Thanks,

    Drew

  • Hi Drew,

    Thanks for your help.

For Q3, the customer asked if there is a way to power down only the unused B channels for the ADC12DJ3200QML-SP power saving.

    Regards,

    JH

  • JH,

Do you also know what is making them choose dual channel, but only use one of the channels? Is it merely to try to save power?

    Thank you,

    Drew

  • Hi JH,

After consulting with a colleague, I believe what your customer is using will be advantageous to them. If they are committed to never using the B channel, then you do not have to worry about the output serializers by choosing the power saving option.

Judging by the requirements, I am confident JMODE 16 will be the right one to use. It decimates by 16 and uses 2 lanes, so you can shut down the B channel lane to save power. Please see the following screenshot from 7.4.4 in the datasheet for more useful information.

    Thanks,

    Drew

  • Hi Drew,

Since the customer will only be using one channel, the ADC's single channel mode should be available.

However, DDC cannot be used in single channel mode as shown below in the datasheet.

Can the customer use the DDC in signale channel mode?

    Regards,

    JH

  • Ok, it is clearer to me now, thank you for that citation.

If you refer to my last comment (it sounds like you were only responding to the one before it), you should be able to shut down the B channel to save power and, while damage to the serializers will likely result, this will not be a problem if you commit to your application. See my description and screenshot above.

    Thanks,

    Drew
