ADS7871 resolution in single ended operation

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS7871

Hi again

Is it true that the full scale in single ended mode is only 13 bits instead of 14 bits wide? Is there a trick to get the full resolution?

Best regards

Timon Meier

  • Hello Timon,

Yes, you are correct.  In this device when is set up in single-ended mode, you can only obtain 13-bits resolution.  The ADS7871 input range is limited to 0-Vref in single ended mode so you can only obtain 13-bits because it converts using half the input range...  If you are converting 8 single-ended inputs, there is not real trick to get the 14 bits of resolution.

If you have the ability to free some of the inputs and feed the negative inputs with a fixed voltage  (for example using the voltage reference), then you could possibly set up the device in differential mode and run your single ended input using the  +/-Vref range obtaining 14 bits.

    Regards,

    Luis.
