ADS8681WEVM-PDK: What access is made to restricted areas of the system when starting the program with admin. rights?

Part Number: ADS8681WEVM-PDK
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS8681

Tool/software:

Hi TI,

our IT dept. installed the GUI on my computer. After starting it admin rights are needed to proceed. Of course our IT does not like that at all. They might let me use your GUI, if they knew what files or folders the program will access ... Similar threads mentioned that issue were posted in your forum.

Can you provide any information on what the GUI does (accessing) during start or later use?

Thank you for your cooperation.

Regards

Andreas

  • As mentioned in a different thread TI issued a new version of the GUI avoiding the need of admin rights. Here is the link to the thread: (1) ADS9224REVM-PDK: GUI software privileges - Data converters forum - Data converters - TI E2E support forums

Does TI plan to fix this and release a new version of the GUI? - Please let me know, if you do so. My team would very much appreciate your effort!

    Best regards

    Andreas

  • Hi Andreas,

Thank for reaching out and explaining the issue. The ADS8681WEVM-PDK GUI installer does the following...

    • Extracts applications files into C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\ADS8681 EVMC:\ProgramData\Texas Instruments\ADS8681* (two folders), and C:\Users\Public\Documents\Texas Instruments\ADS8681
    • Installs the NI LabView Runtime engine required to run the application
    • Installs the PHI USB Driver required to communicate with the EVM.
    • Creates a Windows registry entry at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Texas Instruments Inc.\ADS8681 EVM" to store the installation directory and version info.

Unfortunately, all of the above steps require admin permissions. Even if we were to modify the installer to only install the application for a single user, the dependence on the LabVIEW Runtime engine and the need to install a USB driver would still require admin permissions. However, if you have any suggestions on how this could be made to be more IT-friendly, I'd love to hear them!

    Thanks and best regards,
    Chris

  • Hi Chris,

thank you for your quick reply. Installing the application worked fine before.

    •  When starting the application as a user in our company, I am again asked for administrator rights. The IT dept. gets a headache me requesting admin rights when running a program ...
    • They now ask where exactly the application needs access, what for etc. Can you give me information on that? They might open the lock for those files or folders.
    • The issue is stressed a few times on different GUI in TI forum. I found some comments by TI, that a new release came up solving it without any admin permissions needed when starting the application.

    Have a good day.

    Regards,
    Andreas
