AFE5805 or LM96511

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TX810, AFE5805, AFE5808A, TPS54060, LM96570, TPS54120

Hi, my name is Valeri.

TI offers a chipset for a portable ultrasound probe which consists of LM96550 - Tx pulser, LM 96570 - Tx beamformer, LM96530 - Tx/Rx switch and LM96511 - 8-channel analog front-end.  Is it possible to use AFE5805 instead of LM96511 analog front-end and also TX810 Tx/Rx switch instead of LM96530 with other parts same? Also there is a high-level block diagram of the ultrasound probe on the TI's website and beside the earlier mentioned components there is a FPGA part. What are the functions that FPGA does in this block diagram, probably USB interface? Can you recommend on a particulas FPGA component preferably low power one?

Thanks

  • Valeri,

The AFE5805 does perform the same functions as the LM96511.  However, I would sooner point you to the AFE5808A than the AFE5805.  It has all around superior performance with more functions.  The CW circuit is a CW mixer instead of a CW switch matrix.

Below is the comparison for the T/R Switch

    LM96530 TX810
    Input voltage                                       V ±60  ±90
    Output clamp ( IS= 1mA)         V ±0.7 ±0.7
    On-resistance                                      Ω 18 30-67
    Off-isolation @ 5MHz                      dB  -58 dB
    BW MHz 150 140
    t-on us 2 0.6
    t-off us 0.2 2.7
    Noise spectral density @ 5MHz      nV/√Hz 0.5    (Rref=6.25k) 0.91
    HD2  dB -60 -74
    HD3  dB -65
    Channel crosstalk @ 5MHz        dB -69 -70
    Channels # 8 8
    Package Size mm 8x8   6x6
Package Type   60 LLP  36 PQFN

Also, the FPGA in an ultrasound system can serve a few purposes.  The FPGA can generate the low-voltage trigger, clock and data signals that will feed into the TX part which will a generate a High-voltage output.   The FPGA can also capture hi-speed LVDS serialized data output from the AFE and de-serializer it.  Our AFE EVMs often come in tandem with a deserializer board like the TSW1250 or the TSW1400 to simulate what an ultrasound system might do.  I don't have a recommendation for FPGA other than maybe the Xilinx Spartan series

    Thanks,

    Chuck

  • Thank you for the explanation. I have another question regarding powering of all these parts. I've found out that TI produces LDOs DC/DC and for example I saw recommendation on using of TPS54120 Power Supply for Powering of AFE5808A part and also using TPS54060 to power LM96550 part. Whould you point me to other TI's power supply components to power LM96530 (or TX810),  LM96570 and Xilinx FPGA. As Input voltage for the whole board I plan to use 5V coming from PC's USB port.

    Thanks in advance, Valeri

  • Valeri,

For the TX810,  I can recommend the TPS79633DCQR.

    Thanks,

    Chuck Smyth
