ADS8881: minimum conversion time

Guru 20090 points
Part Number: ADS8881

Hello,

In the ADS8881 datasheet, there is the spec of tconv (min) as 500ns.

I think that only the provision of max is sufficient, why does TI specify min of conversion time?

Best Regards,
Ryuji

  • Hello Ryuji,

The device can be used in different SPI interface modes of operation, with and without busy indicator.  The busy indicator marks when the conversion period has lapsed, and is a bit preceding the output data bit that can be used to interrupt the digital host to trigger the data transfer.

For example, when using the device in 3-wire CS Mode with a busy indicator, once the conversion is complete, the device enters an acquisition phase and powers down, DOUT comes out of 3-state, and the device outputs a busy indicator bit (low level) on the DOUT pin. This configuration provides a high-to-low transition on the IRQ pin of the digital host .   Please refer to figure 53 of the datasheet below.

In these applications, it is useful to know the expected minimum conversion time when developing the software of the controller.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Luis
