ADS5463EVM: CONNECTION TO DAC3161EVM

Part Number: ADS5463EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC3161EVM, FMC-DAC-ADAPTER, DAC3161, ADS5463, CDCM7005, DAC3162EVM

What is needed to connect these 2 Evms without an fpga ?

I need to connect them as a proof of concept with a simple connector or an integrated circuit with clocks .

What kind of connectors are needed ? what is the recommended clock to use for a good communication between circuits ?

Be glad to hear from u soon .

  • Dor Ben David,
Thank you for contacting us. Unfortunately the EVMs discussed are not designed to connect together as a 'pass-through'.

In the case of the DAC3161EVM it is designed to connect directly to the TSW1400EVM (based on Intel Stratix IV FPGA) and use High Speed Data Converter Pro software. Another solution is to connect to a different Intel FPGA board using HSMC connector. We also have an adapter available called FMC-DAC-Adapter that converts the HSMC connection to a standard FMC header (like those used on Xilinx FPGA EVMs).

If you were to design a board for pass-through between the two EVMs you would need to ensure the clock and data interface specification, time-alignment, and signal integrity is maintained between the devices including all connectors. Take a look at the DAC3161 device datasheet table 6.7 Eletrical Characteristics: Digital Specifications and 6.8 Timing Requirements for more detail.

As far as a clock source for the ADS5463 there is a pretty good description in the device datasheet starting on page 31. There are some suggested configurations and diagrams based on performance needs (ex CDCM7005 device Figure 65)

  • Thx Brian,
ok, suppose i need to conenct the DAC3161EVM to zynq ultrascale+ FPGA.
what kind of FMC-DAC do i need to use ?
because i see there is no support of the DAC3161EVM to the FMC-DAC addapter u gave.
  • The FMC-DAC-ADAPTER should support the DAC3161EVM.

The description on the FMC-DAC-ADAPTER only lists the DAC3162EVM, but this is a 2 channel version of the same device (3161 is single channel)

The Zynq Ultrascale+ EVM will be a good choice if it has a standard FMC adapter.  The pinout of the FMC-DAC-Adapter is part of the schematic in the design files document on the product page.

You will be able to map the signal channels into your design using the schematics from both boards.

    Regards,

    Brian
