AFE for Ultrasound Imaging

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TX517, TX810, AFE5818

Hello team,

I'm looking forward to design an ultrasound imaging system using phased array transducers(preferably 2D). I need to figure out the best AFE design for my need. From one of the discussion threads,I have figured out that the signal chain would be TX517 -> Transducer -> AFE58XX -> TSW1400 .

Is there a custom ASIC/ EVM that provides a complete interfacing solution(transmission+reception) for the ultrasound transducer. If not, what would be best way to assemble one ?

I'm very new into this domain and please excuse if the query lacks clarity.

Any inputs are welcome

Regards,
Jayadev

  • Jayadev,

right now we don't have such a solution yet. the best is still the TX517+TX810+AFE58xx+TSW1400.

the best AFE for your need might be the AFE5818 family. it is the 16CH AFEs and has been in produciton for 2 years. many customers verified it and achieved very good images.

    Thanks!
  • Hello Xiaochen,

Thanks for the prompt reply. On that regard, I have a few more questions
    1. Can the output from TSW1400 can be used to produce the images - if yes what kind of display unit is compatible(some specific PC software or does it need a separate display hardware)
    2. Is there any input -output specifications for the transducer to be used with this setup - can I directly use them with these units or do I need additional connectors for the same ?
    3. Any additonal hardware other than the above mentioned + connectors that are needed for my setup - if not, then I believe [ Transducer + (TX517+TX810+AFE58xx+TSW1400) EVMs + Display Unit] should provide me an ultrasound imaging solution
    Kindly reply

    Thanks!
  • building a platform to image requires much more. the TX517 is a 1~2 channel Transmitter. current systems require 32 to 64 channels. thus it is not ready for imaging yet.

the EVMs are for evaluating the chip perofrmance mainly, not for system image. you have to design a own board ; or get help from 3rd party design house.

many researchers are using http://verasonics.com/ for imaging platform. We can also suggest you some design houses if needed. you can leave an email if you would like to have some contact information.

    Thanks!
  • Hello Xiaochen,

    Thanks for the patient reply.

Is there any alternative to TX517 that could be used for imaging purpose ?

Since I'm looking for an end-end solution, I don't prefer using any ready-made imaging platform. Instead I prefer to do necessary post-processing on the AFE output and then used appropriate display to render the same. Any leads on this are also welcome.

    Thanks!
