TSW1400EVM: TSW1400EVM + DAC902EVM : no SYNC out

Part Number: TSW1400EVM

Hi,

I'm prototyping a project based on two DAC902. To do this i've bouth two DAC902EVM and two TSW1400EVM and i want to synchronize one respect to the other.

I've read the doc on how to do it:  ... ... cables ... trigger options in HSDC GUI ... master/slave TSW1400EVW ...

I follow exactly what has been defined in the user guide SLWU87D chapter 3.1.3 and follow ...

My major problem is that, from the master TSW1400, i don't have any trigger output on the four SYNC SMA connectors ... is there any other option/jumper to set in order to have it ?

Thanks in advance

Andrea Fontana

  • Andrea,

Can you verify the TSW1400EVM is getting a valid clock by sending data to one DAC902 and verify the DAC output is correct. Do this with both setups before attempting the trigger testing.

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Hi Jim,

    I've tried one setup alone.

I've got valid clock (25 MHz) and i generate a 150KHz tone correctly observed on both external scope and spectrum analyzer.

But when i set the trigger option of the TSW1400 in master mode (with a cable between one SYNC output and EXT_TRG_INPUT connector) and i click on button "Generate Trigger" in the HSDC GUI, the output of the DAC becomes 1V, fixed.

At the same time i've put another channel of the scope, normal trigger, rising edge, on another SYNC output to see if it will trig, but nothing....

  • Andrea,

Sorry but this mode was never supported for the TSW1400EVM in CMOS mode. Sorry about the confusion the User's Guide may have caused.

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Hi Jim,

This is a real problem !

I really need two setup in which the two DACs outputs are launched synchronously ...

Any idea on how i can get this ? it is possible to have the FW of the TSW1400EMW modified to support that ?   (PANIC !!!)

    Thanks

    Andrea

  • Andrea,

This development would take some time. I am afraid your only option is to download the firmware from the TI website and try to add this feature yourself. Another option that may be easier is to find a way to route the output from one TSW1400 to the two DAC's using a CMOS buffer board or individual signal splitters.

    Jim

  • Hi Jim,
    This really is a deception.

We are in a prototype phase of a main project, time is precious and i really want find a solution.
Your proposal to have a "signal splitter board" will not work, because, we need to apply a stimulus to a system with two different analog signal.
the first analog signal is generated by the first DAC902EVM and the second one by the other one.
This two analog signals must be sent (and repeated) into the system at the same time.
This is the reason for which we have bought two EVM sets, because we believe that it was possible to synchronize the two TSW1400 easily.

What does it blocks to have the two TSW1400 synchro ?
The generation of the synchro pulse ? the integration into the GUI ? Does the board is able to receive a synchro pulse ?
Does it is possible to configure both TSW1400 as "slave" and provide an external synchro pulse ?

    Thanks for your quick answer
    Andrea
  • Andrea,

The triggering function does not exist for the code in CMOS mode so you cannot setup the board as either a master or slave. I am not that familiar with the source code so I cannot answer the other questions. Is there any chance your application could use a DAC3162? If so, we can send you two complementary EVM's to allow you to do your test as this is a LVDS device.

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Hi Jim,

Following the specs also the DAC3162 can fit our application, so, it's seems good, but , maybe i'm wrong, but it seems that the TSW1400 will not fit anymore (only 8 LVDS lanes), right ?

This means that we need to move to something like TSW3100, correct ? Does the TSW3100EVMs are into your offer ?

If you can, we may continue the discussion with my personal mail.

    Thanks a lot.

    Andrea

  • Andrea,

The software development team gave me a firmware drop that may work for you. I had time to verify it sends a trigger on the SMA SYNC1 of the TSW1400. Please give this a try. It is a rbf file that is attached. Copy this to C:\Program files (86)\Texas Instruments\High Speed Data Converter Pro\1400 Details\Firmware.If there is a file by this name already, overwrite it.

    Regards,

    Jim

    DAC_CMOS.zip

  • Hi Jim,

That's great ! The new rbf works very well. I can now synchronize the boards.

I really thanks you and your software guys !

I definately reccomand you to include this patch in your future version of HSDC (... and modify the user guide to avoid this kind of misunderstanding  :-) ).

Thanks a lot again and have a good day.

    Regards
