Hi,

I'm in the process of selecting Transmit DACs for our new SDR project. The power consumption details of TI DACs are not mentioned in detail in the datasheet. Only the worst case specification are given. The competitor have given a graph showing the power consumption under different conditions (For example interpolation rates, update rates, inv sinc with and without etc). Due to this I'm not able to compare DAC's of different manufacturers. Do you have any documents which give these details. I would like to have the power consumption details for DAC5688, DAC5687 and DAC5689.

we do provide typical power dissipation numbers for all DAC operating modes by listing them in a table on the data sheet. for DAC5688/DAC5689, see page 5 (Parameter "P" at the bottom), for DAC5687 see page 7 (Parameter "PD" at the bottom).

Dear Hanza,

In our application we are using the DAC at 200MSPS. Also I need to use the quadrature modulator correction block, and NCO. Please tell the power consumption for 2 cases, (i.) 2X interpolation and (ii.) 1X interpolation.

for DAC5688 with PLL off and DAC5689,

I_AVDD = 140 mA

for DAC5688 with PLL on

I_AVDD = 150 mA

for DAC5688/5689,

INT 2x + QMC ON + NCO ON (fDAC = 200 MSPS) I_DVDD = 240 mA

INT 1x + QMC ON + NCO ON (fDAC = 200 MSPS) I_DVDD = 212 mA

You can disable one or both channels through SPI by implementing the sleep control. This will save on power consumption if the channel is not needed.

Hi Russell,

What is the time required for receovery from sleep mode?

The transmitter in our system doesnt work continously, so while the transmitter is OFF, I would like to "sleep" the DAC. But in the next time slot, it must wake up and start transmission (The gap will be about 2 or 3 microseconds).

Hi Vishnu,

Unfortunately, the DAC5688 sleep to wake-up time is at least 40us (see attached), which may not meet your TX on and off time requirement.

We have newer parts in development that has improved sleep-to-wake up time in the next 3 to 6 months. You can check back on our High Speed Data Converter family later for more detail. Thanks.
