ADS8686S: Interfacing the ADC with CPU e.g. TMS570LC4357

Part Number: ADS8686S
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS570LC4357

Hello,

I have an application where I need 11-15 fast(>=40khz) and accurate(>=16bit) ADC channels.
I have found the ADS8686S which is probably a good fit.
However, I am a bit skeptical about how to connect to the CPU. CPU is a TMS570LC4357.

Probably I would want to use the parallel memory interface (EMIF) for this.

Is such a connection between ADS8686s and TMS570 common or possible. Or is it useful to put a FPGA in between.

Thanks

  • Hi user5177971,

I'm not an expert for TMS570 controller and EMIF interface. As I know, EMIF can be configured as an asynchronous interface to generate the correct timings for connecting to either 8-bit or 16-bit data bus device.  ADS8686S supports both 16-bit parallel interface or 8-bit parallel byte mode, please check figure 1,3 and 4 in the data sheet for the parallel interface timing required by ADS8686S. then you can check if the EMIF on TMS570 can be configured as expected.

    Best regards,

    Dale

  • Hello Dale,
my question is whether using the EMIF interface is a common connection to the ADS8686s, or is it often more common to use an FPGA.

  • Hi user5177971,

Both processor and FPGA are common to interface with ADS8686S, any processor which supports parallel interface can be used.

    Best regards,

    Dale
