Hi Team,

Could you please suggest a DLP/DMD for a fluorescence microscopy application based on this article: https://www.nature.com/articles/nmeth.3000

The specification required are:

Allow transmission of 405 nm light
Not be damaged by high power light input (from a LED-based light source with chip power at 5 W and the light is condensed and output by a liquid light guide.)
Can produce pattern with similar or lower spatial resolution like above, can be as low as 200 x 200.
No need to quickly change the pattern.
This device can be barebone and can be integrated to customized optomechanical parts.
cost is ideally <$1000.

Hello Marvin,

The DLP product portfolio UV Products ( < 400 nm) and Near-UV product (400 to 420nm) under "3D printing & direct imaging" would be best suited for this application.

Please review the section " 7.4 Recommended Operating Conditions" of DMD datasheet for details on illumination power density supported by the DMD chipset.

Thank you for pointing me to the correct product page.

I found this device DLP301S. Ca you tell me how can I find the minimum resolution? Only the max resolution is available. I would like to know if it can be as low as 200 x 200.

Also, what other product do I need to build a system with DLP301s?

Hello Marvin,

The DLp301S is not suited for this application. Please refer to section 6.4 of DLP301S datasheet (Page 9). The max illumination power rating for this device is 3W/cm2 for the wavelength 400 to 550 nm. The area of the active array is ~0.27 cm2 (refer to section 6.10, page 16 of datasheet). The application requires to 5 W. Very likely, you need to select one of the large size DMD for this application due to illumination power requirement.

In case of DMD , each pixel/mirror is addressable. As result low resolution or minimum resolution should not be a concern. Customer can create any pattern or image on the DMD.

Once you have selected appropriate DMD , you need to pick the accompanying controller to drive the DMD.

Hello Marvin,

I have spoken with Vivek about this application. Have you considered the DLPC900 paired with the DLP9000 DMD?

It is possible to use a subset of rows with this device, but in the horizontal direction you would have to load all of the data for each row. Just load 0s where you don't want data for the 200 rows.

The DLP9000 would definitely have the power handling.

I do not think there are any DLPLCRC900DEVMs (Dual DLPC900 controller EVM) available at the moment.

Hello again Marvin,

I forgot to note the power density of 10 W/cm² max at 405 nm in the data sheet. This would require them to use a square about 1000 x 1000 pixels. (slightly less, but this makes it easier). However they could use 5 x 5 "super-pixels" and treat them as one "pixel" in a 200 x 200 super-pixel resolution area.
