DLP4710EVM-LC: Request for Assistance

Part Number: DLP4710EVM-LC
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPLCR4500EVM, DLPC3479

Hi there!

I want to use your DMD products as a binary modulator (to scan over a surface by sequentially switching a column or row of mirrors on and off. I saw that the DLPLCR4500EVM has been used for this application but I have been looking at some of your other products namely the DLP4710EVM-LC and the DLPC3010EVM-LC. Will I be able to program these two EVM's to achieve the same thing, using the GUI?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Kind regards,

Valkyrie

  • Hello Valkyrie,

Thank you for the interest! You can accomplish this using our pattern control menus via our GUI. Internal pattern mode will allow you to upload sets of horizontal or vertical patterns and configure their exposure timings. You are also able to use external pattern streaming mode to stream patterns via external video such as HDMI. Please see more information in the DLPC3479 Datasheet specifically sections 7.3.2.1 External Pattern Mode and 7.3.2.2 Internal Pattern Mode. Any of our -LC chipsets will have this functionality.

  • Hey Maximus

Thank you for the help! I tried reading the DLPC3479 Datasheet and the software programmers' guide to use the internal mode but I'm honestly a bit overwhelmed. As I understand with the internal pattern mode you can only activate an entire row or column. For my application it would be best to be able to address the individual mirrors, so I want to use the external pattern mode.

Secondly, I'm not sure how to actually create the patterns. I want to use a laser light source so I don't really need to worry about programming the LED's but the parameter bytes I find confusing. Using the bits and bytes you can create different patterns but I'm not actually sure how? Can you maybe point me to any resources on sending bits and using bitmaps to address individual mirrors?

    Kind regards,

    Valkyrie

  • Hi Valkyrie,

Completely understandable. I think the important take away is that internal patterns can only be Vertical or Horizontal bars based on how it is implemented, essentially 1D patterns. If you want patterns with both vertical and horizontal elements you would need to do external pattern streaming. In your case external pattern streaming seems to be the better option.

I would suggest simply creating your patterns in any image editing software displaying them on your computer screen and feeding it through the EVM via HDMI. Then you can use external pattern streaming to configure the exposure timings you desire. Be aware that if you do use HDMI whatever the framerate your computer is sending the evm will be the upper limit of what you can project as well.

    Best,
