DLPDLCR3310EVM: No splash screen when powered and not sure if EVM is being 'truly' detected by GUI

Part Number: DLPDLCR3310EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLP4710EVM-LC, DLPDLC-GUI, DLPC3437, DLPA3000

Hey y'all

For the past week, I've been troubleshooting my DLPDLCR3310EVM since I haven't observed a splash screen of any sort and I'm not entirely sure if it's being detected by the GUI when I follow the instructions listed on the GUI (See screenshot below)

I've done the following troubleshooting-wise

  • Followed both instruction sets as stated in the GUI and the Quick-start procedure in the datasheet
  • Verified that the PROJ_ON_LED (D5) lights up after switching the SW2 to the ON position
  • Verified that the mini-USB cable did have both data lines by connecting various microcontrollers and verifying they were being detected in my device manager
  • Ensured that all the ribbon cables were properly seated in their perspective cable housing

At this point, I'm not sure what else I can troubleshoot/verify that would help me resolve the issue I'm having, but any input on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hello Christopher,

Welcome to the E2E forums and we hope to assist you with your questions.

Can you please answer the following questions so I can get a better understanding of the issue.

    1.

Has there been any hardware modifications or software modifications to the system?

    2.

Can you check if green LED D6 and D7 are both on and D8 and D9 should both be off on the top of the board?

    3.

From your GUI picture it does not seem like the connection is correct, you should be seeing the following when connected with all the information generated and filled out. You do not see this correct? Does sending any commands or pressing "Get" do anything?

    4.

Can you go to your device manager and check if you see any issue such as this where you see under Other devices the DLPLCR3310EVM-G1 with the error signal next to it?

If the device is not recognized you may need to update the drivers to get a proper connection. See if you have a program called Cypress Update manager and see if you can repair the following:

  • Hey Alex!

My responses to your questions are as follows:

    1) Have there been any hardware modifications or software modifications to the system?

    •  Software-wise, no changes have been made
    • Hardware-wise, I took apart the Evaluation board to ensure all the ribbon cables were properly seated numerous times and have gotten the same result

    2) Can you check if green LED D6 and D7 are both on and D8 and D9 should both be off on the top of the board?

    • When I plug in JUST the DC jack and leave the SW2 switch in the OFF position, none of the LEDs are on
    • After I flip the SW2 switch to ON, D7, D8, D9 turn on immediately and D6 turns on soon after

    3) From your GUI picture it does not seem like the connection is correct, you should be seeing the following when connected with all the information generated and filled out. You do not see this correct? Does sending any commands or pressing "Get" do anything?

    • None of the field values change whenever I press the "GET" button on the GUI

    4) Can you go to your device manager and check if you see any issue such as this where you see under Other devices the DLPLCR3310EVM-G1 with the error signal next to it?

    • Actually.... I never checked out my device manager until now and realized that the board doesn't even pop up

4.1)If the device is not recognized you may need to update the drivers to get a proper connection. See if you have a program called Cypress Update manager and see if you can repair the following:

  • Hello Christopher,

Sorry let me clarify some of the debug steps.

For the LEDs on the top board, once you switch on SW2, you will see D7, D8, D9 turn on and then D6 and then D8 and D9 will turn off only leaving D6 and D7 do you see that behavior?

Also if you see no errors in your Port for device manager that is probably fine and means the drivers are installed correctly or else the device would be unrecognized.

If you go to the bluetooth and devices page, you should see the following:

    Alex Chan

  • Hey Alex,

Once I switch SW2 from OFF to ON, I see the LEDs D7, D8, D9 turn on simultaneously, then the D6 LED turns on

The evaluation board also popped up on my Bluetooth device list as shown in the screenshot below

  • Hello Christopher,

Please give our team some time to look into this further and we will get back to you next week

  • Hello Christopher,

Can you try re-flashing the firmware maybe there is some issue with the existing firmware on the EVM you have.

There has been a known issue with the existing DLP Lightcrafter Display GUI programming feature not working so we recommend following these steps with an alternate GUI:

    https://e2e.ti.com/support/dlp-products-group/dlp/f/dlp-products-forum/1170082/faq-dlpc3430-corrupted-flash-debug

Please keep in mind step 2 to keep the projector on switch in the "off" position.

Also keep in mind step 3a to pick dlp4710evm-lc because the dlpdlcr3310evm is also dual controller.

Please try this firmware should be version 7.1.2.

  • Hey Alex, here's an update on my end.

    As instructed, I've :

    • Downloaded the 3310 EVM firmware from here : https://www.ti.com/tool/DLPDLCR3310EVM
    • Downloaded/installed the DLPDLC-GUI and followed the instructions to upload the 3310 EVM firmware as instructed here: https://e2e.ti.com/support/dlp-products-group/dlp/f/dlp-products-forum/1170082/faq-dlpc3430-corrupted-flash-debug
      • I kept the switch in the OFF position
      • And selected dlp4710evm-lc
      • After I uploaded the firmware and restarted the Lightcrafter, I still wasn't able to get the DLP LightCrafter Display v7.4 - 3310EVM GUI to recognize the newly flashed Lightcrafter when I pressed the 'GET' button
    • Just for fun, I tried uploading the same firmware using the same DLP LightCrafter Display v7.4 - 3310EVM GUI and was still NOT able to get the Lightcrafter to connect.
  • Hello Christopher,

Thanks for the feedback. Will have to check with the team if there are alternative debug steps to perform. When was this 3310 EVM purchased?

    Regards,

    Alex Chan

  • Hey Alex,

It's been around ~6-ish months since the purchase

I only had time as of this past week to fiddle with the Lighcrafter due to my current workload

  • Hello Christopher,

Thanks for the information. The team will look into it further.

  • Hello Christopher,

Sorry for the delayed response but I discussed internally and have the following debug advice.

My suggestion would be to check power rails and signals throughout the path of communication to ensure all chips are powered up and see if there is any communication occurring.

There are those status LEDs but those only signify if certain power rails are active and not if the specific chip is working.

Please see the design documents here where you can find the schematics and assembly drawings for both the display board (top board of the EVM with LED cables and DMD cable coming out of it) and the system board which is the bottom board of the EVM with the power on switch, fan cables, and power supply input.

I would check the following as highlighted as a starting point:

    1. PROJ_ON signal which goes to the DLPA3000 as well as the dual DLPC3437 controllers.
    2. Check I2C or SPI communications from the front end to the FPGA see if you see any activity on those lines as well as between FPGA and dual DLPC3437 controllers.
    3. Check VIN into the DLPA3000 and the 1.1V and 1.8V coming out of the DLPA3000. Then check 1.8V and 1.1V going into the dual DLPC3437.

  • Hey Alex,

Sorry for the late response but after talking to my management, we decided to just buy another projector; that currently works, and decided to move forward from there.

But I do appreciate the help you gave me throughout this process!
