According to the specifications the projection image size ranges from 10" to 60", and the system has a throw ratio of 1.6. By these metrics I calculate that the system has a minimum focus distance of 13.92".

The system can be used without a BeagleBone, but may require additional development work. In particular, this EVM does not have an onboard HDMI interface. However, all of the parallel video pins are fully exposed, making it easier to create a custom adapter interface. I recommend you review the DLPDLCR2000EVM User's Guide at www.ti.com/.../dlpu049 for a detailed description of the parallel interface in question.

It seems that the lens on the DLPDLCR2000EVM's optical engine is not made to readily accept different lens installations. However, it may be possible to modify the optical engine by adding an extra lens in front to shorten the focusing distance.
