Home Theater Applications For Dark Chip 3 Vs. Dark Chip 4

Hello. I work for Stewart Filmscreen and recently I have been questioned by a few dealers about the differences between these 2 units. The main concern is that our dealers have 'heard' that the dark chip 3 is designed more for dedicated theater environments, and the Dark Chip 4 is intended more for higher ambient light situations or multi purpose rooms. Can you please help me so that I can better field their questions. I have been referring them to your company, but figure it's something I should know myself as well. Thanks.

    Hello and Welcome to the E2E forum.   To answer your question, the Terminology DarkChip3 and DarkChip4 is related to process improvements with the DLP mirrors themselves that when combined with a properly designed projection optical system (like a home theatre projector) improve the Full On / Full Off contrast of the system.  For example, if a system designed to work with a DarkChip3 based DLP chip achieved 2000:1 FO:FO contrast, then a similar system with Darkchip might increase to 2500:1.  The visible difference can be seen when projecting a black image onto a screen in a side by side experiment with two similar projectors where one had DC3 and the other DC4.  The DC4 would show much darker black levels thus giving the overall image quality particularly for a home theatre system and much better overall image quality.
