TPS65987DDK: DRP mode functions and power path configurations

Part Number: TPS65987DDK
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25750

Hi TI Team,

We are developing a device with USB PD using TPS65987DDK as DRP mode(only on the Power role swap mode).

this device shall have a TPS65987DDK and configured as DFP mode initially to source the power of another device (has USB C receptacle) using a USB C plug.

And other times, TPS65987DDK configured as UFP mode, to sink the power from the same device (which has a USB C receptacle) using USB C Plug.

As this PD Controller supports DRP mode, we like to know how both CC1 & CC2 pins are configured.

PD path can source and sink 5V at 3A is fixed and we don't need to do PD negotiation, however, we are expecting this device to control the DP alt mode configuration through the CC pins.

Do we need to use both CC1 and CC2 pins to connect? what are all the different methods to configure the CC pins. Also how we can configure the power paths from Source to Sink and vise versa.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks

Peri

  • Hi Peri,

What application are you using the TPS65987DDK for? If you only need PD support and no TBT, then I would recommend going with the TPS25750.

    Thank you,

    Hari

  • Hi Hari,

    Thanks for the quick response.

PFA high-level block and flow that we are looking to have in our design. Could you suggest /provide a reference design or EVM to validate the path and alt mode selection.

  • Hi Peri,

Since you will need DP mode, you can look into using the TPS65987DDH. To test the basic functionality you can test on TPS65987DDHEVM. On the product page, you will also see there are several application notes available for reference that I would also recommend. There is one for DisplayPort in particular.

    Thank you,

    Hari

  • Hi Hari,

Thanks for the response. I will be using the DDH part for DP ALT MODE and PD Controller as recommended.

While going through application notes, Eval kit, Datasheets of DDH, we got some queries, Please find them below.

    1. TPS65987DDH PD Controller during sink mode (Dead Battery Condition) does not support Display alternate mode. So we need to disable the dead battery mode?
      1. To explain further, Initially, (Power sourced from an external battery) PD Controller will source the USB Plug mobile, and later, when the external battery is dead and We need to configure the PD Controller in sink mode automatically (using DRP), also power source will be USB Plug mobile.(Block Diagram attached for your reference)
      2. Whether PD controller automatically initiate the Power role swapping?
      3. Would you suggest how to use the PD controller as alt mode when it operates as a Sink device? or how to configure the PD controller in ALT Mode irrespective of the Power direction?

Also please provide a support email ID, we would like to get the Schematic reviewed for PD/Alt mode switch blocks.

    Thanks

    Peri

  • Hi Peri,

I will take a look at the block diagram and provide additional updates later this week.

For your sink application question, when the PD controller loses the power source, it can be configured as a source when it receives power from the port partner via VBUS. This type of configuration will happen in dead-battery mode if the PD controller is not being powered from VIN_3V3. However, to do the DP Alt Mode you would need to clear the dead-battery flag via EC and then once the PD is powered it can go into the alt mode. Are you only relying on the power received from the other device to power the system and go into DP mode?

Once I take a look at your schematic I can provide more details. You can add me as a friend and provide your email and I can reach out from there.

    Thank you,

    Hari

  • Hi Hari

Could you pls approve my request so that I will be able to share my sch and explain you in detail?

    Thanks

    Peri

  • Hi Hari,

I have completed the SCH of PD Controller, I would like to get it reviewed. please share the email ID or accept the friend request, so that I can share it immediately.

    Thanks
    Peri

  • Hi Peri,

Yes I can review it, I've accepted your friend request and you should be able to message me and send me your schematic.

    Thank you,

    Hari
