TPS65987D: TPS55288 Integration with TPS65987D Concept Review and Comments required on SCH

Part Number: TPS65987D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS55288

Hi TI Team,

We are working on power management for our design. Please find attached block diagram  Power_Management_06222021.pdf

We are integrating TPS65987DDHRSHR with TPS55288QRPMRQ1. As buck-boost converter taking power from a charger (sometimes it takes power from Battery)

I have mentioned details in the block diagram about three cases that our design that should work

I have gone through the datasheet and source documents to understand about PD controller & Buck-Boost converter.

Here are my queries:

  1. Can TPS55288 Buck-Boost Converter be able to buck/boost the below voltage and current requirement?
    1. VIN 7.4 - 8.4V, Required VOUT could be 5V/9V/12V at 3A rate.
  2. Can we configure TPS65987D using STmicrocontroller over I2C or PD controller need separate programming?
    1. What could be the program/firmware code size for PD Controller configuration and Buck-Boost Converter configuration?
    2. Can it be possible for both IC's from ST Microcontroller over I2C?
  3. Here are three cases, that I have explained in the block diagram.
    1. Case 1: Whenever the USB TYPE C Receptacle, connected to a WALL WART ADAPTER, we need to charge the external 2S Li-ion Battery, also we need to provide the power system (which is including Display & Phone connected to TYPE C Plug).
    2. Case 2:When NO PC/NO Adapter connected at the Receptacle, external 2S Li-ion Battery in discharge mode(provide the power system which is Display & Phone connected to TYPE C Plug)
    3. Case 3:When NO PC/NO Adapter connected at the Receptacle, external 2S Li-ion Battery removed or discharged to dead condition mode. Phone (Acts As Source) and starts to the power system Display and other IC’s via PD Controller.

Please let me know if you have any queries, Also if you understand the block diagram, I can share the sch over the email for your review.

Thanks

Peri

  • Hi Peri,

I will help answer the questions on the TPS65987D and loop in the relevant team members who are responsible for the TPS55288.

You can configure the TPS65987D using an external microcontroller, but the TPS65987D also needs its own dedicated firmware to be loaded. You would use our application customization tool to generate a binary that would then be flashed to the TPS65987D via an external EEPROM or your microcontroller.

Was there a question in regards to these cases?
