For cable detection purpose only, is it necessary to provide 5V for both PP_5V0 and PP_CABLE ?

I am setting PP_5V0 PDO source as 5V 1A to provide VBUS. Is it possible to turn off the source from the PD controller if we are not going to source anything?

  • Hi,

It is best to have these supplies always present in the system as PP_CABLE will be used for VCONN which is use for when the PD controller needs to communicate with the cable. Not having PP_5V0 will also introduce some complications with PR Swaps (Power Role Swaps).

I strongly recommend having this 5V rail ready.

  • Hi Jacob,

We are facing issue where the PD controller will keep sourcing 5V 1A to anything we connect. Our application is not meant to do that. If we are not sourcing or sinking anything, it is ok to disregard the PR Swap right? If so then is there any way to open the PP_5V0 to cut off the 5V sourcing?

    Thanks.

  • Hi Isaac,

Is the design a self powered device only that will always be a UFP? If the system is not intended to support 5V @ 1A why do you have this as an option? Technically you can use one of the bus powered projects and set the sink capabilities to be 5V @ 0A which will always be Power Sinks and UFP in terms of data.

I would only go this path if you system is intended not to source.
