DP83869EVM: unidirectional transmitter and receiver Media convertor separate using DP83869EVM

Part Number: DP83869EVM

What settings need to be make in order to make a unidirectional media converter using DP83869EVM at 1000 Base?

Could the changes be done on schematic level so that there is no change required in the firmware?

If yes, Please illustrate the changes and provide your valuable help

Kind Regards

  • Hello,

There will have to be some firmware configurations that will be needed. You could not connect the RX lines so the PHY only takes data from the MAC and transmits it, but not the other way around. However, you will have to be certain of this design as there is no great way to fix if design does not work. This is a highly uncommon use case.

You would follow what Vikram had suggested in the original post by putting PHY in internal loopback and restarting. In addition, as the PHY will be tricking itself due to internal loopback, you will need to manually configure the MDI (Speed, MDI-X, etc. which would normally be taken care of with auto-negotiation).

    Sincerely,

    Gerome

  • Hello Gerome

Thank you so much for your prompt response

As my application requires building a transmitter and receiver separately, what configurations shall be required to change for  receiver as the suggested will work for transmitter device I suppose

Please correct me if I am wrong

I shall tell more about my application- I want to build a unidirectional Transmitter and receiver device separately. Thus one Media converter will act solely as a Transmitter only and the other device shall act as a receiver only

    Kind regards

  • Hi Avi,

Can you not use firmware on your side? The straightfoward way I see if this is the case is to configure the PHY in Media Converter Mode and connect both lines to the LP to establish the link, but then have one pair (TX or RX) be inactive as traffic will be sent one way.

If firmware can be used, then following Vikram's response in aforementioned post and tailoring one board to be TX only or RX only while doing loopback and manual configuration of MDI would be the only other avenue of approach.

    Sincerely,

    Gerome
