DP83826E: DP83826E configuration for EtherCAT

Hi,

What is the recommended TI configuration mode for DP83826E as MII Ethertcat slave interface . The datasheet suggests that ADVANCED mode should be used for industrial Ethernet fieldbus applications like EtherCAT. However, the TI app note 344b schematic picture seems to conflict with the datasheet since the PIN1 is connected to the ground, disabling the Advanced mode in hardware. Is this chip EthecCAT compatible since I don't see it listed in the Beckhoff 'approved' PHY. I am observing all the users on the e2e form struggling to configure it for EtherCAT.

Can any TI expert clarify the situation?

Hi Jagbir,

We recommend Enhanced mode, as it doesn't require configuration via SMI when following snla344b strap configuration.

Figure 3.1 shows an example for Basic mode, where SMI is needed to initialize the PHY for EtherCAT operation.

I can't put these straps since these etheCAT signals are shared with the boot config pin of Sitara. I need to use the SWI interface to configure the EtherCAT pins.

Hi Jagbir,

It is possible to have the PHY and Sitara share the boot strapping pin, but the power-up sequencing will need to be staggered such that the two strapping events are not concurrent. Once one of the devices is up, then it is recommended to hold it in a reset state (float the pins of this device) until the strapping for the opposing device is complete. Any discrepancies in the configuration past this point can be handled in software (aside from PHY_ID).

Is it possible to use Enhanced mode with SWI interface. The only strap used is PHY address.

Yes, this is possible. it will need to be initialized via the SMI.
