Hi TI expert, 

    This is a follw up topic base on 1186019 (https://e2e.ti.com/support/interface-group/interface/f/interface-forum/1186019/ds90ub948-q1-aeq-restart).    WIth the recomamnded power up sequence(in 1186019/ds90ub948-q1-aeq-restart) we implemented, we sitll have back screen issue reported in the field.  any ideas? 

    And in 4 cases of the those black screen reported early, we found the value of UB929 0x0C register is 0x16 when issue happens and ~one minute later, the 0x0C registesr valure changed to 0x5, and display works. 

The 0x0C regiter wth 0x16 valure, means there link lost, CRC error,  Cable link NOT detected. 

     

Some questions here:

1. Which factors may case Cable ling not detected ?  any idea to address it? 

2. In our design, the input HDMI clock is around 95Mhz with the below EDID configuration,  which is quite close to the Serializer UB929’s maxim 96Mhz HDMI clock support capability, could you please help check any risk to run 95Mhz HDMI clock for UB929 part? Is there any margin of the 96Mhz for UB929?

    If there is FPD-Link lock and/or link margin issues. Lock will fail to be obtained, no forward channel data or control channel will be achieved.

    If HDMI does not drift and is stable at ~95MHz, this is okay.

    Yes, if jitter or drift does not meet datasheet spec; then these quality issues get multiplicated to the FPD-Link since the SER uses this as clock for the device.

    This can also manifest as CRC errors, flickering screen, etc. 

    Do you have register dumps of SER and DES sides? Does lock pin go low during this issue?

    For questiosn 3. we understand the UB948 locks to UB929 dpends on the HDMI singal quality. The question is aobut Cable Link detect, to detect if the cable is exist between 929 and 948 also depends on HDMI signal?

    Dear Logan, 

    This black screen is very critical, Customer confirmed 441 times cluster black screen cases was reported by end user from January 2023  till now,

    We tried with the updated 929/948 init sequence revorted(return back to origianl flickering issue init sequence) , the black screen issue can NOT been reproduced from last Monday till now. 

    Looks that the updated 929 and 948 intiializaiton is the cause of the black screen issue.  Can you please help check why the recommanded init sequence could case black screen issue?  waht is the gap?  Please  let us know if you need any more infomation to indentify the gap.

    Can you provide the actual initialization scripts as well, since what is attached is the register dumps. 

    Just to confirm I understand, you are saying the old version of the script also had flickering screen issues; but new version has full black screen?

    Why is Cable Link focus here? If flicker/black screen, it is more important to verify Lock signal on DES side; since cable link will also drop with Lock loss.

    Has more investigation done on whether this is replicable with PatGen and internal timing from 929? This might help identify an HDMI issue. 

    Has MAP tool or BIST been ran on link to quantify link margin and robustness of design?

    At this point, it is very important to quantify the link integrity of the link by using MAP tool, BIST BER measurements, etc. MAP tool will create a table based on success at different AEQ values and strobe locations, which is used to determine the overall link margin of the design. 

    The previous script provided will only implement any errata or required script sequencing, if there is an underlying issue with the design such as the below items:

    • Channel specification (return loss, insertion loss, cross talk, etc violations)
    • HDMI CLK input stability and jitter specifications
    • Power supply stability and noise specifications
    • Power sequencing issues

    All could lead to lock and link margin issues that manifest as flickering and black screen. AEQ value adjustment is not a valid workaround for failing channel specs or datasheet spec violations. 

    Please work with Ethan on providing the following items: 

    • MAP tool result measured from deserializer within ALP. See userguide here: https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/snlu243/snlu243.pdf
    • Measure total channel return and insertion loss and check against channel specification (Ethan can provide offline)
    • Measure HDMI CLK jitter and clock stability meets datasheet specification
      • This requires special scope settings to match CDR PLL, see below:

      • To characterize total jitter, TI recommends to measure the TJ@BER with a high speed oscilloscope equipped with a jitter analysis program such as DPOJET. The clock recovery settings used in the DPOJET measurement are designed to match the input PLL characteristic of the serializer device. For 949:

        - Method = PLL Custom BW

        - PLL Type = Type II

        - Loop BW = 1MHz

        - Damping = 700m

        - Target BER = 1e-10

        - High pass filter: None

        - Low pass filter: None

    • Provide schematic, layout, and information on cable length, etc
    • Try do to SER PatGen with internal timing to see if issue also occurs.

    Since there is such a high failure rate, I suspect we will find a system-level issue such as jitter, signal integrity, etc.

    Hello Logan,

       Thansks for quick commenst, we will provide the test results. 

    Btw, as with the updated 929 and 948 initiallization sequence, then we got balck screen issues, with the old initializaiton sequece, flickering screen was reported , but no black screen. And also, the black screen issue can be recovered if we power off/on 948 and then re-init 929 and 948.  Could these indicate the issue is most like 929 and 948 related path?

    Thanks for the info. 

    Can you provide the full initial script also the modified scripts? I would like to compare them side by side just to better understand the changes. Can you have Dongbao/Ethan send those over?

    I reviewed the signal integrity and measurement files, I did notice an issue with the return loss is violating channel specification. Since such a short cable is used here, return loss issues can manifest from any minor impedance discontinuities and create reflections. As an experiment on the bench, can a longer cable or an additional inline cable be added to see if the error condition/rate improves?

    Lastly, can you clarify the error reproducibility? How many units in vehicle/on bench have issue? How easy replicable is issue, issue is observed in X number of power cycles, etc?

    Hi Logan,

         Thanks for your comments. Our comments and questions as below. Could you please help check. 

    1. SDD11 of some frequency points in the range of 1.1GHz – 1.273GHz are over the limit of TI. But in our user case  PCLK is 95MHz, the FPD LINK Data rate  should be 95M * 35 = 3.325 Gbps. The typical frequency of FPD LINK signal is out of 1.1GHz-1.273GHz. Do we need to care these SDD11 over limit frequency points? What could be impact of these SDD11 over limit frequency points?

    2. The tested Margin Analysis Status as below with the cable used in the real vehicle , It is fully follow meet TI's requirement  So LINK lost sould not happen, right? Actually, the link margin test has been implemented along with TI FAE even with the failur unit, Link margtin looks good. 

    3. We have shared the old 929 and 948 init sequence and soruce code (with flickering issue) and new 929 and 948 init sequence(recoomanded by TI, target to address display flickering issue) and soruce code (blacking screen). Coud you please help review and commnet?

    Another point please to be noted , the black screen issue can be recovered if we power off/on 948 and then re-init 929 and 948, no need any operation to 929 HDMI input(SOC HDMI output).
