SN65HVD1786: SN65HVD1708E - J1708 transceiver

Part Number: SN65HVD1786
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THVD1550, DS36277

Hi team,

Why is the SN65HVD1708E and similar J1708 orderable devices still referenced in the SN65HVD1786 device datasheet if these devices were never released to production? Customers looking for J1708 applications will see this as an option they can order, but then these devices were never actually released (per other E2E posts).

Thanks,

Jacob

  • Hi Jacob,

It was published in the original; datasheet and just was kept in all the revisions as generally the images are retained from older datasheets - I am not sure why it was placed there originally - and it has been missed in more recent updates; I will add this to our revision list to fix this issue.

J1708 uses RS-485 devices with an inverter on the DE pin - as that is generally how its referred to - but any RS-485 transceiver should be able to work. The only part that I know of from TI that is active that uses an active low DE signal is the DS36277 - but due to its age I generally wouldn't recommend it and would recommend a newer RS-485 device and I'd look to something like the THVD1550 (it is currently used in J1708 based applications - generally either with a physical inverter on DE or by inverting the bitstream through firmware).

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

    Best,

    Parker Dodson
