DS90UB960-Q1: TVS

Part Number: DS90UB960-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPD1E01B04-Q1

Hi,

Do I need to put a TVS at the FPD-LINK line? If so, could you give me some guide for choosing the TVS and placing it.

  • Hello Zehui,

It is not required to put additional ESD protection diodes on the FPD-Link interface since the device pins have built in ESD protection cells (see the datasheet specifications section for rated ESD protection of the built in pin). If you require additional protection beyond the level of protection at the pin, you can add an external diode as well. The main requirement is that the diode must be rated for high speed applications to provide very low insertion loss at high frequency. We would typically recommend a device like TPD1E01B04-Q1. You must also pay close attention to the placement and working reverse voltage of the diode in PoC applications. If you use PoC, then you either need to select a diode which has a higher working reverse voltage than the PoC voltage, or place the diode on the device side of the AC coupling caps. Either placement is acceptable

  • Hi Casey,

There should be a equivalent TVS in the chip. What's its breakdown voltage? It matters because if external ESD diode has a higher breakdown voltage it couldn't protect the device as the internal diode will break down first and suffer high current.

  • Zehui,

We can not share details of the internal design structure of the ESD protection cell for our IO. However we have these specs related to the ESD performance on 960:

We also have the following ABS max specs for the DC voltage applied at the pins:

  • Hi Casey,

I understand. I didn't mean to ask the design detail and just want to point out the reason why I want to know the threshold. If you cannot give a threshold, at least a safe value should be recommended. I think it's a reasonable request.

  • Zehui,

I will check on this to see if we have data available. Please allow 1-2 days

    Thanks,

    Casey

  • Zehui,

The breakdown voltage for the internal ESD diode cell is ~8V
