TUSB9261: USB & SATA/ 4TB SATA drive/TRIM

Part Number: TUSB9261

Tool/software:

HI,

For TUSB9261IPVP, we need help to check for following questions.

1. Can the USB & SATA interface transmit Test Patterns?
2. This Bridge support the ATA/ATAPI-8 specification, which means it can support a 4TB SATA drive?
3. Does this Bridge support TRIM?
4. Regarding the previous question about SMART, TI replied, "The recommendation is to use ATA pass-through to send SMART commands." Does this mean that manual transmission of ATA pass-through commands is required to obtain SMART information?
5. Is there a demo board available for purchase that is compatible with this IC? If you have, please provide the relevant information.

  • Hi Chen,

Here is a link to the EVM board: https://www.ti.com/tool/TUSB9261DEMO.  The TUSB9261 DEMO User's Guide is located on the TUSB9261 product page here: https://www.ti.com/product/TUSB9261.  This answers #5.

    I will follow-up with answers for #1-4.

    Regards,

    Nicholaus

  • Hi Chen,

    Sorry for the delay.

    1. Can the USB & SATA interface transmit Test Patterns?
Yes it supports USB test patterns.  It also supports SATA test patterns.

    2. This Bridge support the ATA/ATAPI-8 specification, which means it can support a 4TB SATA drive?
Yes, it supports the SATA interface up to Rev 2.6 (Gen2).

    3. Does this Bridge support TRIM?
I'm still trying to understand TRIM and if the TUSB9261 supports it.

    4. Regarding the previous question about SMART, TI replied, "The recommendation is to use ATA pass-through to send SMART commands." Does this mean that manual transmission of ATA pass-through commands is required to obtain SMART information?
You may use the PASSTHROUGH command to obtain smart information.

    Nicholaus

  • Thank you for your reply.

But I can't enter the links. It shows page not found.

Please verifying if there are any issues with the provided link.

  • Hi Chen,

Yes, those links were internal links.  I have removed them from this post and summarized them.

    1. Can the USB & SATA interface transmit Test Patterns?
Yes, it supports USB test patterns.  It also supports SATA test patterns.  Here is the test document for SATA.

    4. Regarding the previous question about SMART, TI replied, "The recommendation is to use ATA pass-through to send SMART commands." Does this mean that manual transmission of ATA pass-through commands is required to obtain SMART information?

The SCSI SAT-2 specification (SCSI / ATA Translation, version 2) includes a general purpose mechanism by which any arbitrary ATA command can be encapsulated in SCSI (and then passed over the USB physical layer using the existing USB mass storage class standard). This is known as the ATA PASSTHROUGH command.

This allows access the SMART information from SATA drives.

    The TUSB9261 supports 16-byte SCSI R/W commands.

The following SCSI commands are supported for ATA devices (i.e. HDD):
    • INQUIRY (standard, supported VPD pages page, unit serial number, and block
    limits VPD page)
    • READ FORMAT CAPACITIES
    • MODE SENSE (6 and 10-byte)
    • READ CAPACITY(10 and 16-byte)
    • READ (6, 10, 12, and 16-byte)
    • REQUEST SENSE
    • TEST UNIT READY
    • WRITE (6, 10, 12, and 16-byte)
    • VERIFY (10, 12, and 16-byte)
    • START STOP UNIT
    • REPORT LUNS
    • PREVENT ALLOW MEDIUM REMOVAL
    • SYNCHRONIZE CACHE (10 and 16-byte)
    • ATA PASS-THROUGH (12 and 16-byte)
For ATAPI devices such as CD/DVD/BD-ROM, all SCSI commands are passed directly
to the device so command support depends on the device.

  • Hi Chen,

Is there any update on this issue?

    Thanks,

    Nicholaus

  • Dear Nicholaus,

Thank you very much for your explanation! We are still conducting practical tests to check for any issues.
Currently, we have not received your feedback on item 3. Could you please confirm if there are any updates on this matter?

    Best Regards,
    Ocean Chen

  • Hi Ocean,

    Sorry for missing item #3.

    3. Does this Bridge support TRIM?
The TRIM and UNMAP are ATA commands.  With the ATA PASS-THROUGH command, they may be used.

    Nicholaus
