Tool/software:
What happens if I leave an LVDS output (SN55LVDS31-SP) un-terminated? Is the output protected ? Is there additional power consumption?
Hello,
Thank you for your question. Unused outputs can be left floating: (+) SN55LVDS31: Unused Pins - Interface forum - Interface - TI E2E support forums

Amy,
Thank you for the answer. I am aware that I can leave the output floating, but I was wondering if it will cause a raise in the power consumption of the chip. Older chips used to max power consumption as, I assume, they tried to drive the non existing line. Should I terminate the gate locally?

Hello,
Please refer to this application note to clarify: Power consumption of LVPECL and LVDS
Thanks, Amy
The datasheet does not measure or guarantee this, but the current through the termination (4 mA) is likely to be much higher than any additional supply current of an open output.
