Tool/software:

In a previous question it was suggested to use TCAN1044A as a CAN bus activity monitor in order to reduce complexity.
I like the suggestion. Can you review the pin connections to be sure I have this correct.

pin 1 TXD not being used connect to VCC
pin 2 GND connect to system ground
pin 3 VCC connect to 5V regulator ouput
pin 4 RXD connect to LED driver circuit (used to monitor bus activity)
pin 5 NC VIO connect to 5V
pin 6 CAN L connect to CAN L
pin 7 CAN H connect to CAN H
pin 8 STB connect to GND (want to put the IC in receive mode)

    Hi Mike,

    Apologies for the slight delay as we were on holiday yesterday. 

    These pin connections are good. Just be aware that TCAN1044AV-Q1 (note the "V") has the VIO pin, which you likely already noticed. Ether version of the device will work just fine, I just wanted to point that out.
