SN75LVPE5421: Loss evaluation

Part Number: SN75LVPE5421
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN75LVPE5412

Tool/software:

Hi team.

Below is Gen5 application. Can SN75LVPE5421 support this application with 54db total loss?

My opinion: PCIe Gen5 can accept up to 36dB loss, the max EQ of SN75LVPE5421 is 24dB, so the total loss we can support is 60dB. The total loss below is 54dB, so it should be fine.

  • Hi Nison,

54 dB is higher than the typical SN75LVPE5412/421 applications we have seen (usually less than 50 dB), and on the high end of the general Gen 5 redriver applications (usually 52 dB or less), but it may still be OK. For this kind of situation, I would recommend that the customer run some simulations to estimate if the eye margin would be OK, and pay special attention to the layout to help lower the amount of additional SI problems from impedance changes or reflections.

    Best,

    Evan Su
