DP83869HM: Connecting PHY DP83869HM to PHY of two different mac .do i need to use transformer between phy connections or can i connect directly (both are same phy)

Part Number: DP83869HM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83869

Tool/software:

hii , I am using DP83869HM phy in my project . i want to make  connection between my FPGA  AGILEX-7 AND WIFI module. my both phys are sitting between mac and wifi module. I am using it in MII mode 100mbps ,So can i make a direct mdi connection between both PHY's or do i need to add transformer between both. If i can connect directly ,will it function properly or it is mandatory to add transformer. if mandatory then why ?(my both phy are in same voltage level )

  • Hi,

Transformer is not necessary if you are making connection within the same ground. Please put 33nF capacitors in between the connection. Please refer to this FAQ for more information. Note that the figure in the FAQ mentions putting a pull-up resistor, but you can ignore those for DP83869 since this is a voltage mode driver, and that figure was created for a current mode driver.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Best,
    J
