DP83TC813R-Q1: link up issue when reboot system

Part Number: DP83TC813R-Q1

Tool/software:

customer use PHY DP83TC813CS2 in following system:

TDA4VE main cpsw <----> DP83TC813CS2 <----> pc

driver comes from

github.com/.../dp83tc812.c

when test the system in the high temperature environment, occasionally after system reboot, from PC ping will fail,

but if do "ifconfig down/ ifconfig up" operation, ping will be Ok

another customer with DP83822, has similiar issue, in Linux system log,

link is down, but check PHY link status of BMCR register, link is up, and if executing "ifconfig up/down", Linux link status will be up,

system will recover,

and read PHY BMSR register:

BMSR value is 0x786d, port is linkup

if plug in/out, the Linux Ethernet port link state is down

but "ifconfig eth1 down / up "can work

suspect the driver has some problem

please help check it.

Hi Semon,

What version of the Linux kernel are you using?

Is this issue limited to high temperature environment for DP83TC813?

Is it possible to share the csutomer's schematic?

at normal temperature, this issue will happen too, the Linux kernel is 5.10.

in fact, similiar issue is existing other case:

(+) AM5716: CPSW-3G after enable the port, change MAC address, will cause traffic broken - Processors forum - Processors - TI E2E support forums

the solution is also "ifconfig down/up" workaround

Thanks for sharing relevant E2Es.

When the issue is occurring, I am curious to know if the issue is resolved through a PHY reset. You can use phytool to access phy registers.

Example:

phytool write eth3/5/0x1F 0x8000 // Perform PHY hard reset

If phy is strapped in managed mode, set 0x18b[6] = 1 to enter autonomous mode. Use RMW procedure to set bit 6.

// Indirect read

phytool write eth3/5/0xd 0x1f

phytool write eth3/5/0xe 0x18b

phytool write eth3/5/0xd 0x401F

phytool read eth3/5/0xe

// Indirect write

phytool write eth3/5/0xd 0x1f
