XIO2001: Gen 3 compatibility

Hi, We are currently using  a Pericom part and it is not Gen3,4,5 compliant due to reclassification of reserved registers.  I am wondering if the XIO2001 has the same issue.   Was hoping to update the design to use the TI part but the other thread suggests there is a problem with this part too.

Will TI make a Gen3,4,5 compatible part?

BTW in some client HW we tried forcing to Gen1 but I think this only changed the link rate and not the protocol as the problem persisted.

  • In theory, the XIO2001 should be compatible with any other PCIe device. (The connection will stay at the lowest common level, i.e., Gen1).

    In the linked question, the problem was signal integrity issues, not a protocol issue.

  • Does TI have plans to update their device?  Your answer is basically the same as Pericom - if the system ratchets down properly including the expected register set, the G1 device will work properly.  Issue is Intel has a bug in their chip set - direct connection ports from the CPU work fine but ones through the chip set are looking for the newly defined registers even when moving down to the lower speed.   We are checking to see what happens with AMD parts.  We figure our clients will likely blame our HW rather than the motherboard - and yet there is nothing we can do about it other than perhaps change devices.  Before we go to the trouble of updating our designs it would be nice to know if the G2 TI part has the newer registers defined and therefore immune to this issue.  If so, worth doing and if not, no point.   One side note:  If TI does update they will be the only ones with working parts and soon the only one with parts as Pericom has NRND on their part now [just added that status] and eventually that will be EOL.   Perhaps shrinking market but still very necessary for adapters.

  • PCIe Gen2 was defined in 2007. It is unlikely that TI would decide to create such a switch now.

  • TI don' t have any plan to develop PCIe bridge.

  • Unless I am missing something the XIO2001 is a gen2 device.  I figure it must be to meet the 66 MHz rate on the PCI side.  I think I will get one of the EVM boards and try it out as it seems to be unknown if the XIO2001 has the right registers defined to meet the newer protocol ratcheted down to G2 speeds.   

  • Well that answers the update to Gen3 idea.  Too bad as there are a lot of PCIe slots with need to mount PMC and similar HW.  

  • XIO2001  do support 66Mhz.
