DP83TD510E-EVM: Galvanic isolation needed for DP83TD510 SPE PHY

Part Number: DP83TD510E-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83TD510E

Hi,

I see that the reference designs for DP83TD510E typically include a common mode choke on the line side, but no galvanic isolation.

  • In which applications would galvanic isolation be required or recommended for this PHY?
  • Is a common mode choke generally sufficient for most designs?
  • Are there any guidelines on when to include isolation vs not?

Thanks!

  • HI Svein,

In which applications would galvanic isolation be required or recommended for this PHY?

This PHY supports both Capacitive and Galvanic Isolation. Usually, we see galvanic isolation being used in industrial applications, while automotive applications prefer capacitive isolation.

Is a common mode choke generally sufficient for most designs?

No, a CMC only helps in cleaning up any noise on the line, some type of isolation is still recommended. In PoDL applications, it is critical. This FAQ shows ways to use both types of isolation.

Are there any guidelines on when to include isolation vs not?

It is recommended to always include isolation.

    Best,
