ESD2CAN24-Q1: GND floating

How is the behavior when grounding pin of this ESD device is floating and only IO pin connected to general circuit for OV protection(Not used in CAN)? When ESD energy is coming, is that any functional to absorb the energy to protect circuit?

    I'm a bit confused in the request. Are you leaving GND pin floating? There is no path to GND so the diode will basically act like an open circuit. All energy will go into downstream IC.

    Here's more clear info.

    The customer is considering using this part to protect a 24V (±10%) bias power supply over a long cable run of 100 m, with a high-frequency carrier signal at 300 kHz. In the proposed circuit configuration, the bias power (VCC) is connected to IO1 and system ground to IO2, effectively placing two TVS diodes in series. In this configuration, the breakdown voltage would be in the range of 50 V to 60 V, which the customer has confirmed is acceptable for their application. Could you advise whether this configuration is acceptable from an application standpoint?

    You will not see this behavior. Breakdown voltage will still be 24V. Basically, ESD2CAN24-Q1 is 24V bi-di between any two pins, meaning pins 1-2 are similar to pins 1-3 and 2-3. So you would only get a 24V bi-di behavior between pins 1-2. This is due to how the technology and die design is.

    The diagram in datasheet could be misleading.

  • Thanks Bryan. However customer wondering to know how come with this 24V breakdown behavior? We thought it would be 24V + 24V = 48V.

    The internal structure of the diode is different to what the diagram shows. 

    I would not show this to customer since this is a quick draft that I made, but basically this is what the internal structure looks like. Please use it for your understanding only.
