FireWire for Windows 8

We want to buy a Dell 660 desktop with Windows 8. We wanted to install (Syba Combo 2x 1394b + 1x 1394a Firewire Ports PCI-Express Controller Card, TI Chipset). Dell has has told us that Win 8 does not support firewire (Dell has there own Firewire add on that works for Windows 7).

1. Does Win 8 support firewire?

2. If it is supported... what product should we use?

  • Hi Mike,

This is more of an interface than Precision Data Converter question.  We'll check around and get your query moved to the correct location/forum for an appropriate answer.

  • Hello Mike,

I am not very clear on the question, win 8 does support IEEE 1394, are you getting a yellow bang?

what TI device are you using?

We have seen a yellow bang on some devices in win8 coming from a OS resource allocation problem with the PCIe-To-PCI bridge.

If you are getting a yellow bang please see the attached document.

    Regards.

  • Elias,

We want to buy a new desktop with win 8 (we have not yet purchased the desktop or a FW device)

Dell customer service has told us that win 8 is not compatalbe with FireWire.

    1. Does TI make a FW device that is compatable with win 8?

    2. What is the FW device?

    Thanks.

  • Dell customer service is lying.

Windows 8 is compatible with all TI FW controllers (and, for that matter, with all other FW controllers).

However, Windows 8 dropped support for the "legacy" FW driver. If you will be using some device that comes with a separate driver (most cameras or audio interfaces), and if that driver has not been updated to work around the bugs in the new Windows 7/8 FW controller driver, you might run into problems.

Other FW devices that use a driver built into Windows (i.e., hard disks) will work just fine.

  • Hello Mike,

OHCI should work just fine in Win8.

Please send a screen capture of the hardware Id of the TI device with the yellow bang. Unibrain has some drivers for Win8.

    Regards.

  • Thanks for the help so far.

I have not yet bought the desktop or the FW device.

I have a Canon HV10 from 7-8 years ago (records on 1080i tape).

We want to make sure that this camera is compatable on the new desktop running win 8.

    Best

  • I installed a TI XIO2213 (OHCI compliant) IEEE 1394 controller card with built-in driver in my new Gateway DX4860-Ur308 running Windows 8, following the instructions provided.  The Control Panel cannot find the card and it does not show up on the Device Manager.  I installed the card in the two available slots with same sad results.  I installed firewire cards in my last two computers without any problem but this is driving me crazy!  HELP!  This is also the third card I have tried with the same results and Gateway is telling me to return the machine as something may be wrong with the motherboard.  UGH

  • The XIO2213 requires two drivers to work, a Standard PCI-to-PCI Bridge Driver and a OHCI Driver, both are provided by windows.

If the vendor is telling you there may be something with the MB than it might, I recommend you to return the motherboard.

    Regards.
