Good day!

I have a customer who is currently designing a POS with USB Type-C. They are planning to use our TPS65981 and have some questions below:

1. How do we program the device or configure the device when our prototypes will arrive? We only installed a 8 Mbit Serial Flash on SPI, at what interface shall we use to play with the configurations using the TI software?

2. Since the IC is programmable, we assume that the Serial Flash to load the configurations to the TPS65981 once it is powered?

3. What is the process in when we mass produce our boards? Mount a preprogrammed Serial Flash?

Also, they are requesting to review their schematic. Can you also please check below schematic if there are any problems?

Also, can you advice on how they will hook up the buspowerz Signal. Our application is 100% DFP.

Hi Alfred,

For the schematic, I would remove the 0 ohm resistors from RPD_G1/2 to CC1/2. They are used for systems that support dead battery.

How much power are you expecting to support?

You would have to generate the required firmware for the system with our Application Customization Tool

Most developers will have pre-programmed flash to mount on their boards. For those that want to do firmware updates, it is generally done with the system controller over I2C. Check below for the documentation.

Our customer have decided to use two TPS65981 for their two USB C ports. Do we have an option/solution for power sharing just like in TPS25741?

Hi Alfred,

Are you referring to sinking power through two different Type-C ports? This is accomplished by simple ORing the sink paths.

Or are you referring to sourcing power? The system controller could know the current power status of each port and update the source capabilities according to the power limits of the system.
