HD3SS3220: Programming the HD3SS3220 doubt

Hi all,

I am designing a USB device with a USB type C connector as output of the device.

In order to make the bridge from USB3.0 to USB type C we have choosen the HD3SS3220 IC.

As a USB3 device, the HD3SS3220 shall be configured on UFP mode (isn't it?). To make the design simpler, Iwould like to configure the HD3SS3220 in GPIO mode with the default type C current advertisemnt.

There are any other parameter that shall be configured? Will the device lost any capabilitie with the GPIO mode instead the I2C mode?

Hi Juanjo,

If the HD3SS3220 will be working as a sink, hence, the device must be set in UFP mode, where provides the flexibility to advertise higher current without I2C (in your case if the default current is used, thus is fine). In GPIO mode the user is not able to get some information such as active cable detection, cable orientation, interrupt status, duty cycle, debounce time, among others features that are useful according the application.

Just to know, in which application can that be useful? I can not realize the aaplication in which you care realy the orientation of the plug.

Once I finish the schematic I will upload to have the Community feedback.

Hi Juanjo,

Depending the application, for example, if the device is going to be set as DFP, the current mode advertise should adjust the circuitry for every current level or adjust the percentage of time that DRP shall advertise DFP, etc. Basically when the device is set in DFP or DRP, several functions should be monitored/controlled, on the other hand, in UFP mode the GPIO configuration is good enough.

Hi Luis,

Thanks a lot for the explanation and the support given.

Here I attach the design schematic for a HD3SS3220 to a USB Type C connector (with ESD protection and so on) using GPIO configuration. I would like to have feedback =D.

Finally I put a set of resistors just in case I need to use a High or medium current advertisement.

I put a 887kOhm resistor between VBUS and VBUS_DET instead the 900kOhms recomended, due to it is quite difficult to find a 0402 900kOhm resistor. Will this have an impact in the system behaviour? (guess not, but just in case I send the question).

The Schematic Doc can be used as a Sheet Symbol in Altium.

Hi Luis,

First of all thanks for the review.

Just to finish a couple of questions regarding the review.

1.I had a couple of resistors to allow the change from Medium, high or defult current advertisement. Is that Ok?

2. In the Current Mode Pin, I have placed a set of resistor to pull the pin high or down, but what happens if the Current mode has a 500K tied to VDD and (medium) and the Out1 and Out2 set defult or high?

3. I put the decoupling caps as you said, there are all ceramic caps, except the 47uF cap for VDD that I used a tantalum cap, ¿shall the 1uF be a tantalum cap as well?

4. I am not using an "audio accesory, shall then I pull up the OUT3?

5. I left VCONN_FAULT and ID pins floating due to they appear floating at the UFP application note of the HD3SS3220, please confirm that the pins shall be pulled-up.

An additional question that just came to my mind, shall In the TX- and TX+ comming from the device (Pins 6 and 7 of the HD3SS3220) use the 100nF series cap?

The SBUS signals of the Type C connector can left floaing right?

Hi Juanjo,

TXP and TXN shouldn't have AC caps, please take a look into the Figure 10,11 & 12 of datasheet.
SBUS can be left floating.
