TPD1E1B04: ESD test failure using TPD1E1B04

Part Number: TPD1E1B04
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPD1E04U04

Hi,

Can any body suggest changes to be done while doing ESD test as our LCD is failing even with TPD1E1B04 diodes mounted on mipi lines of the LCD & also Type C input connector (data lines) & also LCD back panel was grounded to ESD gnd.

  • Contact discharge test (+/-2 & +/- 4KV) at USB Type C power connector   : Display got blank completely (back light was there) at +/- 4KV . But this will be considered as a Type C device (Failure) since human intervention was there .
  • Air discharge test (+/- 4KV & +/-8KV)   : The display went to hung state & audio was playing, sometimes  got  blank completely (back light was there)when iterations were repeated with +/- 4KV .
  • Discoloration in display along with split screen was observed at +/- 8KV testing,  and audio was playing. After reboot, the system came back to normal state. But this will be considered as a Type C device (Failure) since human intervention was there .

Initially we checked with ESD diode not mounted & then with diodes mounted , but the result appear to be same in both the cases as mentioned above. kindly let us know if there any changes to be made so that the test could be passed

Akshay

  • Akshay,

I believe the issue is that the clamping voltage is not low enough to protect the down stream device. You should try the TPD1E04U04 which is our lowest clamping unidirectional device.

  • Akshay,

Did you try the TPD1E04U04 device out?

  • Cameron,

Sample 1:We tried with part TPD1E04U04 in the MIPI lines of the display along with Multiple grounds connected to LCD back panel. but it failed once again with both Contact & Air discharge.

Sample 2: Also in other sample we tried with  ESD diode removed & also gnd points disconnected. this time at-least we were able to see better results with test passing on Contact discharge (+/-4kV)(Applied near Type C Connector). But LCD was again failing when air discharge (+/- 4KV, +/- 8KV) were applied on the LCD display side.

Sample 1: Again we tried with the sample 1 by removing ESD diodes & also gnd points disconnected for crosschecking, Contact discharge got passed but Air discharge got failed.

Please suggest if there are any alternative solutions  or reason behind the failure .

    Regards,

    Akshay

Yes i have tried with TPD1E04U04 only

  • Akshay,
I believe there is coupling onto some lines that is causing the downstream device to go to an unknown state.
Are you striking the ground plane? This seems like ground bounce because when you reboot it turns back to the original state without damage. Do you have a schematic or layout that shows the design and also where you are applying these tests to.
