TPD1E1B04: ESD Clamping voltage related issue

Hi

I have a query regarding TVS diode selection for AM3359 Processor reset switch.

I am planning to use TPD1E1B04 ESD diode.

However, clamping voltage for this device is given as 8.5V @ 16A. Will this not be an issue?

Can AM3359 Processor inputs take 8.5V Maximum voltage? According to the datasheet Maximum IO voltage sustainable is 3.6V?

    The only way to get a good estimate is to look at the TLP of the Sitara processor on the reset pin. This would tell you what clamping voltage is necessary.
    Also I assume this pin only ever has positive voltage on it so if you are worried about the clamping performance I would use the TPD1E04U04 which has our lowest clamping in the 1 channel devices.

    I am unable to find the TLP curve from the AM3359 Sitara processor datasheet. 

    It would be helpful if i get generalized approach, which is applicable to other manufacturer and i still want to design ESD protection for LCD connectors, Rotary switch.

    Is it optional or mandatory to put ESD diode for header signals as well ?

    The TLP curve is not normally given in data sheets that don’t have higher ESD ratings.
    The TLP curve is what will give the best indication of what clamping voltage is necessary. There is a great video series about ESD and how to choose it at

    It a difficult to be certain for a generic device because the internal ESD structure changes from device to device.
    It is highly recommended to have ESD protection on all lines that have a connector to the outside world.
