TPS65986: Application Customization Tool version 4.01

Guru 29720 points

Part Number: TPS65986

Hi Team,

My customer is evaluating his board TPS65986 is mounted.
He connects the board with 4-port bus-power USB Hub(BSH4U105C1BK) under default DFP setting of "Application Customization Tool version 4.01", however the behavior is different between "Standard(Recommended)" and "Advanced" as the following.

1)Project -> New Project -> TPS65986 -> Standard (Recommended) -> DFP only
His board couldn't output VBUS(5V) normally. <- abnormal operation

2)Project -> New Project -> TPS65986 -> Advanced -> DFP only
His board could output VBUS(5V) normally. <- normal operation

Do you know why the difference is occured?
Is there any way to improve abnormal operation using "Standard(recommended)" setting?

Best Regards,
Yaita

  • Hi Yaita-san,

    Can you please include some more information on the passing and failing case? it would be helpful if you could include a PD trace and a Oscilloscope capture of VBUS and CC of a passing and failing case.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Hi Eric-san,

    I can duplicate the customer issue using TPS65986EVM by connecting USB Hub (BSH4U105C1BK).

    1)Project -> New Project -> TPS65986 -> Standard (Recommended) -> DFP only
    TPS65986EVM couldn't output VBUS(5V) normally. <- abnormal operation

    CH1: VBUS, CH2:CC1, CH3:CC2

    2)Project -> New Project -> TPS65986 -> Advanced -> DFP only
    TPS65986EVM could output VBUS(5V) normally. <- normal operation

    CH1: VBUS, CH2:CC1, CH3:CC2

    I can use "TPS6598X Utilities Tool" to debug in current situation so may I have your advise to further investigating why Standard (Recommended) setting shows the issue?
    I don't get PD trace now because my customer and I don't have protocol analizer.. Is it difficult to investigate the issue without protocol analizer?

    Best Regards,
    Yaita

  • Hi Yaita-san,

    Thank you for the added details. I believe the issue occurs because the standard template sets the Type-C Current advertisement to 0.9A in the System Configuration register (0x28). This setting is hidden in the standard template but can be changed in the advanced template. I would suggest you try changing the Type-C Current setting in the advanced template from 3A to 0.9A to see if you can reproduce the issue using the advanced template.

    If this answers your question, PLEASE select This resolved my issue

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Hi Eric-san,

    I can reproduce the issue to change the Type-C Current setting in the advanced template from 3A to 0.9A.
    Thank you for your support!

    Do you know why VBUS can't output 5V if Type-C Current advertisement is 0.9A?
    Should we consider it as USB Hub(BSH4U105C1BK) rejects the advertisement?

    Best Regards,
    Yaita

  • Hi Yaita-san,

    Yes, it seems that the USB hub does not function with less than 3A Type-C advertisement.

    Thank you,
    Eric
