TPS65981EVM: Displayport + USB 3 Data

Part Number: TPS65981EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HD3SS460

Hello,

I'm trying to establish a USB3 link with two TPS65981EVM boards as described in the User's Guide SLVUAW8–August 2016 on page 10.
When doing it as shown in the picture below, then it only establishes a USB2 link, but not a USB3 link to a flash drive. I did make sure the Flash Drive is USB3 capable by connecting it directly to the PC.
I set the switches S1 as described and initially used the firmware as was at delivery of the EVM boards.
Since this did only establish a USB2 link I was looking in the TI E2E community and fond this post:
So I tried to download the firmware mentioned there: TPS6581_HD3SS460_DRP_Source_Advanced_3_08.tpl and TPS6581_HD3SS460_UFP_Advanced_3_08.tpl but I could not find these. The Application Customization Tool seems to generate a newer version of it (4_03 instead of 3_08). When trying this, no USB link could be established to the Flash Drive. After that I tried the standard version of DFP and UFP, with this it did again only establish a USB2 link.

Which firmware should I use to establish a USB3 link?

Thank you.

  • Hi Viktor,

Did you ensure that the "Multi-function preferred" bit is set in the DisplayPort capabilities register? This would help to ensure that a USB3 mode of DisplayPort mode is entered.

    Thank you,

  • Hi Eric,

Thank you for the fast response.
The recovery flash image does not have the "Multifunction Preferred" bit set. So I modified it and programmed this firmware to both EVM, but with this it did not establish a USB link at all.
    Any suggestions?

    Regards,
    Viktor
  • Hi Viktor,

Can you enter Debug Mode with your EVM and check the Data Status register? You should see if USB3 Connection field is set or not.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Hi Eric,

the USB flash drive I used until now seems to have a problem with the connection through both EVMs. When connecting it directly, then it is able to establish a USB3 link, but through the EVMs not.
Now I use a differnt USB flash dive and with the modified firmware that has the "Multifunction Preferred" bit set it does establish a USB3 link through the EVM boards.
    Thank you for your hint.

    Regards,
    Viktor
