TPS65983: TPS65983 design for Thunderbolt Titan Ridge

TPS65983: (Intel JHL7340)+TPS65983B to implement PD 5V 3A

Part Number: TPS65983

Dear Sir：

Tongfang use Titan Ridge SP (Intel JHL7340)+TPS65983B to implement PD 5V 3A.

MB is already in debug, but they don't know how Bin file will synthesize Ti's FW.  And they  asked for help with Intel FAE about ROM files, they are told that TI is required to provide ROM file. Other relevant burning tools (name, version) and the process steps of updating firmware are also involved.

Please provide your suggestions. thank you!!

    Hi Faith,

    You can request access to the GUI tool through the TPS65983B product page.

    Please keep in mind that the TPS65983B is only approved for use in TBT Device Designs that are exactly following an Intel Reference design. Other applications cannot be supported by the TPS65983B.

    Hello. Intel confirms that the FW of TPS65982 can be used for the application of TPS65983A for AR.

    But they are not sure whether the TPS65982 FW can be used for the application of TPS65983B for TR. Intel also has no TI window to ask for help.

    Hi Faith,

    TPS65982 cannot run TPS65983B firmware or TPS65983A Firmware. To use the TPS65983B, an Intel Reference Design must be followed.

    Hello!

    The same question is that we use TPS65983B to develop PD 5V3A based on Intel TR platform, let me first sort out and then trouble you to confirm a problem.

    First of all, how customers burn TPS65983B FW, customer required profile, you have provided customers with GUI to generate profile and solved this problem.

    Secondly, customer required available Intel TR TPS65983B FW, which can support Thunderbolt mode. Whether TPS65982 FW can be applied to this has been discussed before . By practical verification, it is not possible. Our TW colleagues have provided customers with a version (it needs to be noted that this version FW still only stays at the level of TPS65983B EVM board device), and then assisted customers to modify the current hardware circuit, TPS65983B EVM can support Thunderbolt mode and output 5V now.

    Finally, the problem arises. Now in the development of Intel TR platform, Titan Ridge main chip Intel JHL7340 and TPS65983B FW are integrated together. As a Host version, that how to modify and integrate the corresponding TPS65983B FW into the main platform software is unknown for us and customers.

    Can you ask AE for some advice from your side?

    Hi Faith,

    The TPS65983B Full Flash binary should be merged with the Intel Titan Ridge Binary using the Imaginarium tool from Intel. This is not something that is done by TI and we cannot provide that tool. Once the image is created by Imaginarium, the titan ridge will handle the update of the shared SPI Flash.

    As you said, The Imaginarium tool can merge the TPS65983B binary with Titan Ridge Binary. But can you supply TPS65983B HOST FW that is not used on TPS65983B EVM or Device Side?

    Hi Faith,

    All provided FW for TPS65983B is included in the 83B configuration tool that you downloaded from the secure site. A Host design would probably use the "Add-In Card" design from the tool.

    According to customer feedback, our configuration tool can only be used to configure the FW of Device side. So I want to confirm with you how host FW can be generated.

    In addition, would you like provide TPS65983B's PD UCM Driver?

    Hi Faith,

    Unfortunately, we do not provide any FW for host designs. We only provide the FW for the TBT devices listed in the configuration tool. However, for a TBT host design, you are free to use TPS65982 or TPS65987D (Recommended).
    I am seeing who from my team can provide the UCM Driver.

    1.UCM driver and OS have coordination problems. May I ask whether we have plans to maintain for Win RS6/RS7 in the future？
    2.May I ask whether there is any information about EC code control for TPS65983B?

    Hi Frank,

    I don't think there is a change needed to the UCM driver for Win RS6/RS7.

    We do not have any EC code available for TPS65983B. However, you can follow the TPS65982 FW user's guide: www.ti.com/.../slvuah7b.pdf
    All the same concepts apply.
