DP83869HM: Non-Managed Media Convertor Application

Part Number: DP83869HM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83869, MSP430F5529

2 Questions

1) Does the DP83869HM require a MAC at the MII interface for a non-managed 1000Base-T to 1000Base-X media convertor application,

2) Can the DP838869HM be configured to loopback the received fiber signal or data (i.e. the signal or data received from the fiber interface transmitted back to the fiber interface) for the non-managed 1000Base-X media convertor application?  I was not able to determine from the 9.2 functional block diagram,  loopback diagram Figure 19, and loopback availability exeception Table 4.

Thank you

  • Hi,

    1. DP83869HM needs additional configuration to be used for 1000Base-T to 1000Base-X Media convertor. We are looking for enhancements to make it fully unmanaged mode. Please reach out to us thru your TI Sales/FAE representative for mode details.

    2. DP83869 supports multiple loopback in each of the Operations Mode. Can you please explain the application little bit more ? Accordingly I shall be able help you recommend the correct mode.

Thank you for responding.  Can I just attached a Microcontroller with an embedded 10/100 MAC to the DP83869HM MII interface to configure the DP83869HM for a 1000Base-T to 1000Base-X media converter mode.

I am assuming the DP83869HM requires the media converter configuration using the the MDIO and MDC.

Regarding the loopback, I would like to loopback the SGMII per the attachment for 1000Base-T to 1000Base-X media converter mode.

  • Yes, loopback to FIber Transmit is possible by thru internal loopback at MII. Refer to datasheet for details.

Thank you for your reply.  I just have 1 other question remaining.

Can I just attached a Microcontroller with an embedded 10/100 MAC or do I need to attach a 1 Gigabit Ethernet MAC integrated circuit to the DP83869HM MII interface to configure and operate the DP83869HM for a 1000Base-T to 1000Base-X media converter mode.

    Sincerely

    Sean

  • Hi Sean,

Configuration of Media Convertor can be done with bare minimal MCU ( MSP430G2) as it's needs just 2 GPIO to connect with MDIO/MDC interface. MAC interface is not needed at all.

We provide USB-MDIO tool over MSP430G2 and MSP430F5529 to do so as well.
