HD3SS3212: Selecting superspeed data line

Hi all,

I am designing a circuit with HD3SS3212 and USB type C connector and I am wondering if I can using just a simple logic using the pull-up and pull-down resistors according to the schematic.

I would like to avoid additional ICs and additional MCU management.

Please have a look at the schematic and let me know if the approach is correct.

if you are using type-C connector, you need CC controller like TUSB320LAI to make it work, or just HD3SS3220

Hi Brian,

thank you very much for the answer. If I understand it correctly, both TUSB320LA and HD3SS3220 can operate it in DFP mode without I2C communication. Is it correct? I would like to avoid the management from CPU as much as possible.

I still think the only thing is to determine the orientation of the cable by CC1/CC2 pins and mux the pins. What is wrong with my original schematic?

yes, both TUSB320LA and HD3SS3220 can operate it in DFP mode without I2C.

there is a circuit to detect CC pin , not sure iyour original schematic can make it work.

TUSB320LA and HD3SS3220 are clear.

Back to my circuit R86 and 5.1kOhm pull down resistor on UFP turned on when CC2 active side should act as resistor divider leading some 0.4V (L level) to SEL input and selecting the route A to C, otherwise A to B is selected.

Is there anything else what should be controlled?

logic seems work. how do you control vbus switch? Vbus should not be on until a UFP is connected.

OK, I was not aware of it. Is it C-type connector specific? I planned switching it from MCU, but without knowing if UFP is attached. I have just discovered that my circuit would not work with active cables due to their pull down on the other CC line.

I checked the HD3SS3220 datasheet. The VBUS switch seems to be controlled from MCU anyway, not directly from HD3SS3220. The switch seems to switch also DM and DP lines. Is there a specific reason for this? Most circuits I've seen do not switch these lines.

yes, it's type-c specific, sometimes DP/DM is used for data transfer, sometimes it's only for charging. so it need switch as well
