TUSB8041A: Can I replace the 5V additional input power with the VBUS power supply of the upstream port?

Hi!

I want to use the two TUSB8041A to complete the 7-port USB HUB design. When I refer to the relevant circuit, I found that there is an additional 5V power supply. I want to use the upstream port power supply directly. Can it be realized?Thank you very much.

Hi,

Utilizing two TUSB8041A you will need a external 5 supply to support the maximum power consumption of both hubs. You should also consider that in the case where 7 devices are connected to your hub 500 mA/900 mA (USB2/USB3) of current should available per port, in order to be complaint.

Hi,

I only have one tablet computer, this computer only have one USB3.0 port. I want to turn this USB 3.0 into 4 USB 2.0 ports through USB HUB, add CH340G and MAX490 into three 422 ports.Three 422 interfaces only transmit data.A USB2.0 is connected to the CH340G chip for data transmission with the STM32F103 chip.A USB 3.0 port is required to be converted to an Ethernet port, and the remaining two ports are reserved.Therefore, I think the current per port does not exceed 100MA.In this case, can I replace the extra 5V power supply with VUSB?

Hi,

Remember the current consumption per port would be in addition to the power consumed by two TUSB8041A. One USB3 Vbus connection could only provide a maximum of 900 mA @ ~5V per USB spec. Also TUSB8041A needs both 3.3V and 1.1v supplies. You can attach schematic to this thread and I can review and provide comments.

Hello,

Please accept my friend request and send me the schematic. Please be aware that the TUSB8041A is not rated as a bus powered hub, so it requires more power in suspend mode than allowable for a bus power hub per USB specification. Functionally, it can be bus powered, but you would not be able to get a USB-IF compliance logo.

Hi,

If the VBUS provided on the upstream port is standard USB3.0 port VBUS with only 900 mA, you cannot power two hubs and multiple downstream devices from that source.

If the PWRCTL outputs are not used they should be left unconnected and please make sure the oscillator input to the hub is 1.8V, not 3.3V.
