TUSB213: TUSB213 DC boost

Part Number: TUSB213
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB217

Hi Sir/Mam,

I would like to share with you that i am using TUSB213 as redriver for extending the usb cable length. Currently i have made my own cable where i have 5m prechannel cable then TUSB213 and then 5 m post channel cable support using the TUSB213 IC. The configuration which i have kept is AC boost is at level 3 and the DC boost is at the highest level.

During testing i have observed that when i connect smaller pendrives/USB to TTL converter the cable works fine. Infact i have tested the cable by reading and writing more than 100gb of data sequentially as well as parallely between the pendrive and the PC using USB 3.0 port and USB 2.0 port as well. I get an average read and write speed of about 25MBps depending on the file size.

When i connect a SSD hard drives the cable detects the SSD and also i am able to send the data to it but at a very slower rate, whereas when i connect 1tb HDDs at the end of the 10m cable then unfortunately the cable fails. At time it detect HDD but doesn't communicate or at times it doesnt detect the HDD at all. I have checked the circuitry and i personally believe that it may be the I2R losses of the cable which may causing the HDD a lower voltage or lesser current due to which the HDD may not be getting sufficient power.

Please let me know if there is any solution for this issue. If there is any IC which i can use along with the TUSB213 to resolve this issue. Thanks

  • Hi,

    A couple of point here:

    • I recommend you try TUSB217 as it is a updated version of TUSB213 and more suitable for this application.
    • Have you measured VBUS at the far end of your cable and verified it is higher than 4.75V?
    • Is this a USB 2 only cable? Are you measuring an expected IR drop?
    • Do you have the ability to probe DP and DM with high impedance probes? You can look for USB 2 HS enumeration in this way.

  • Hi Malik,

    Yes, i have ordered TUSB217,

The VBUS at the far end of the cable is 4.85V when connected to the external HDD. When there is no load connected the VBUS is at 5.10V to 5.20V. I don't know why but i am not able to understand what may be issue because of which the cable is not able to communicate with the external HDD.

When i connect any pendrive it works like charm, i have also tested connecting the USB to TTL modules and it works fine. Unfortunately with the external HDD the cable seems to detect the external HDD, but for some reason it is not able to transfer the data at a very high speed. I get the transfer rate with the HDD of 300kBps whereas when i connect the pendrive i get the data rate of 20MBps.

It will be great if anyone can throw some light about what may be the possible issue while using the external HDD.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

Do you have the ability to look at how the HDD has enumerated over USB? You can use a tool like USBTree to do this. Do you have a High Speed scope available to you to look at the USB traffic on DP and DM? It seems like the signal intergirty suffers here and the HSS/SSD may be enumerating that lower speeds like USB 2.0 FS. Do you see this with multiple HDD/SSD?

  • Is there any more support needed for this issue? If so please reply with any relevant details so that I can further assist you. For now I will be marking this thread as "TI Thinks Resolved". • Hello Malik,

Unfortunately i dont have the ability to look how the HDD enumerated over the USB. I tried to look for the USB tree software but didn't understood which has to be downloaded and what do i need to check using that software. I face the similar issues with the multiple HDD.  I do have DSO(Digital storage oscilloscopes) It will be great if you can let me know what exactly should i measure on the DP and DM line.

The SSD at times works much better as compared to the HDD, hence i thought voltage might be the reason, so i connected an external 5v power adapter at the center of the cable in parallel to the USB213 VCC and GND connections. Now the voltage doesn't drop below 4.9V on the USB line even after connecting the HDD.

Please let me have your feedback.

  • Hi,

Is it possible for you to probe and capture DP and DM at the moment of device insertion? You will be looking for the first negative edge on DP and capture at 200 ms/div. You will be looking for USB 2 HS Enumeration, please share a capture for additional feedback. How are you checking the data transfer rate? Have you tried using TUSB217?
