DP83867IR: Power consumption under Standby Mode

Hi Team,

My customer is evaluating DP83867IR. When they measured input current of +2.5V for VDDIO and VDDA2P5 under Normal Operation and Standby Mode, input current under Standby Mode was higher than that under Normal Operation. During Normal Operation, LinkUp is established.
- Standby Mode: Set Bit-2="1b" of "PHY Control Register (PHYCR), Address 0x0010"
- VDDIO=2.5V
- VDDA2P5=2.5V
- VDDA1P8=unused
Do you think that is correct power consumption of the DP83867IR?

Hi Koshi,

It's possible that the current consumption under Standby mode will be higher than under Normal Operation. When you say "during normal operation," does that imply simply establishing link or are you running traffic as well?

Hi Nikhil-san,

Normal Operation:
- LinkUp & No Traffic
- I_IN (+2.5V) = 85mA
Standby Mode:
- No LinkUp
- I_IN (+2.5V) = 250mA

Is the above current consumption under Standby Mode proper?

Are there any solution to reduce current consumption under Standby Mode?

Why are you using Standby Mode in this application? We will need to dig in to the test data to confirm these numbers.

Hi Koshi-san

Rather than using Standby Mode (bit 2 of register 10) you may try using a Power Save Mode (bits 9:8 of register 10). Please try using one of the three power saving modes and see if this helps your current consumption. You may keep CLK125 enabled through bit 4 of register 10.

Hi Nikhil-san,

Thank you for your suggestion. The customer tried the Power Save Mode, but the current consumption of +2.5V and +1.0V did not changed.

<Test conditions>
- 10Mbps, Full-Duplex Mode
- Power Save Mode (Bits 9:8 of register 10)
      11 = Passive Sleep mode:  0x0010 0xD328
      10 =Active Sleep mode:      0x0010 0xD228
      01 = IEEE mode:                 0x0010 0xD128

So, they understood that there was no way to reduce the power consumption under Standby Mode.

Hi Koshi,

Instead of using register 10 for IEEE mode, use bit 11 of register 0. Was there a link partner connected when using Passive or Active Sleep mode? This is necessary for the NLP signals.

Additionally, please try using bit 7 of register 10 for Deep Power Down mode and check the current consumption.
