USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM: How does Power Duo work?

Part Number: USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM

In normal USB-C power delivery, four conductors carry ground and four conductors carry VBUS.  They are spec'd to carry 3A, and smart cables are spec'd to carry 5A.  How does the Duo design carry 10 amps?  Does it repurpose (for example) the SuperSpeed lines or something for power?

    Hi William,

    No, the design only uses VBUS like a traditional Type-C PD application. The design only states that the TPS65987D itself is able to supply the 10A, but if you have a cable or connector not rated to that high of a current, then that would be the limiting factor as opposed to the power path of the PD controller.

    The PD controller is able to do this by using both of the internal power paths, each rated for 5A, in parallel with one another. This of course allows for higher current potential, but also halfs the RDson of the power path.
