TPS65982: TPS65982 DFP in dead battery condition

Part Number: TPS65982

Hi Sir,

My customer want to use TPS65982 as PD in their design. In one condition, their device need to boot up in dead battery mode and become to DFP/Sink to output DP signal. Is it possible? Any reference pjt we can check? Project we built currently can't accept DR swap to DFP in dead battery mode without self power (It means now PP_Cable power input in dead battery mode). Thanks for your kindly help.

Best regards,

Gary Teng

  • Hi Gary

In your configuration using the GUI, you can have the TPS65982 initiate a swap to DFP. This means that once the configuration is loaded in the dead battery scenario, the PD controller will immediately initiate a swap to DFP

  • Hi Adam,

We know the setting and we set that already, but DR swap is still rejected by our board. Using 98x read evm has the same result. Would you please helping to confirm the setting at your side? Thanks for your kindly help.

  • Hello Gary,

Looking through the design files of the EVM, I remember that the EVM will not work with this use case. To provide VCONN and to become a DFP, 5V must be supplied to PP_CABLE as well as 3.3V supplied to VIN_3V3. You must then clear the dead battery flag to resume normal behavior. In a system like this, the PD controller will provide the high voltage contract to the system, which will power the circuitry to enable the battery as well as the 5V and 3.3V supplies. An embedded controller would then clear the dead battery flag so that the PD controller can accept VCONN swaps and become the DFP

  • Hi Adam,

I use app config group setting + gpio to clear the dead battery flag and swap to DFP, and my device success to enter alt mode. Thanks.

But, there is another issue. The dongle don't send out HPD signal so DP connection can't be build up. We use normal NB and there's no problem. Is there any command we can use to request external device resend out HPD?

    Regards,

    Gary

  • Hi Gary,
Glad that fixed your issue. For the HPD signal, you can try having the PD controller initiate the alternate mode discovery process to see if this forces the dongle to send the HPD signal.

Send the 'AMDs' 4cc command to the PD controller which will force it to start the alternate mode discover process. This is the only idea I have of forcing the dongle to potentially send the HPD signal
